As each day goes by in our lives, we are faced with new challenges and trials. Good or bad, everything has a purpose which helps us learn new things about ourselves and mould and change us into the person that we are today.
In the play ‘Skate’ written by Debra Oswald and was performed in 2003, the main character, Zac Marlowe, portrayed a life of a typical teenager, growing up and his life changing.
This essay will include the changes of Zac as a character through the beginning as he first thinks of himself as, “I’m just a skater, what do you expect?” (scene 1, page 13) and how this view of himself differentiates as the play proceeds till the end.
At the beginning of the play, it examines Zac’s character and personality from the very start. Zac could not care less about school and it is shown as he stated, “Once I finish year 10, you can’t make me stay at school. That was the deal.” (scene 2, page 20) to his Mum, Gail, as he felt pressured by her to do well in school when Zac believed that the hard work wasn’t going to get him anywhere. However, although his attitude is negative towards studying, Zac in any case still cared about his friends and the people around him despite being popular. Once Lauren started to become part of their lives he did not like like her and one reason was because Corey liked her. He stated to her, “Yeah, well, don’t even think about mucking him around. He’s got enough hassles as it is.” (scene 6, page 37). This highlights the way of how he cares for his bestfriend Corey because he doesn’t want him to get hurt by a girl that doesn’t have feelings for him back.
The development of Zac as a character starts to show midst through as the audience is able to observe how Zac enables the things around him influence and change him. When Corey died, it made an enormous impact on himself and decided that he would try to get the skatepark to happen for Corey, also in dedication and memory for him. However, it was a hard thing for him
