When one decides to undertake university education they must be prepared to sacrifice so much of their time, energies and resources in order to focus on the demands of school-life. It is particularly difficult if one has a family of their own since it implies a long absence from them. This report is therefore dedicated to my wife (Christabel), my son (Brian Nasilele), and my two daughters (Isabel Lerato Nasilele and Faith Tumelo Nasilele). In particular the report is dedicated to my youngest daughter- Isabel Lerato Nasilele- who was born at the time when I started my degree programme at the University of Zambia. It meant that I had to miss the opportunity of witnessing her grow and being there to see her take the first stride. To my family, Iam greatly indebted and I thank them a million times for the sacrifice they made towards my university education.…

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 HISTORY OF SIWES The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is the accepted skill training program which forms part of the approval of minimum academic standard in the various degree programs for all Nigerian universities. The scheme was therefore introduced to provide students with the much needed practical experience in order to promote their technical knowledge and serve as a means of exposure of students to industrial activities. The scheme requires students to go out to their various fields of expertise to gain experience which wouldn’t have been possible ordinarily in their schools. As the training programme goes on, students are exposed to different equipment and facilities allowing them practicalise the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in the lecture room. 1.2 AIM OF SIWES It is aimed at exposing students to equipment professional and work methods and serves as a way of safe guarding the work area and workers in the industries and other organizations. It is also aimed at promoting and strengthening the technical know-how of the students in order to develop their skills and…

For the completion of this study, I am indebted to those people who helped me in a variety of ways. It is needless to say that it is impossible to thank all persons who have helped me in shaping my personality, philosophy of life from the tender age to the present time. This makes my task easier because it leaves me with one option of thanking those whom I know. Firstly I am highly indebted to Mr M. Hafejee, my supervisor for the interest he has shown in me and in my field of study from the time we started to work together. I wish to record my great gratitude for his generous help. I also wish to thank him for providing essential background information thus giving greater meaning, purpose and realism to the entire dissertation. Further, I also wish to thank the University of KwaZulu Natal for allowing me to use its Library facilities.
