This Report is based on Student Industrial Working Experience Scheme (SIWES) undergone at the Amuludun 99.1 FM, a branch station of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). The principal objective of this Industrial Training is to prepare students for working experience and to give students the opportunity to practicalize the theoretical aspect being thought in school.

The Industrial Experience was based on working with every department’s Personal Computers, Printers, Laptops, Switches, Routers, Hubs and Computer peripherals. The installation, repair and preventive maintenance of these devices were part of my job description.

The School of Computing & Informatics (formerly Institute of Computer Science) launched the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) program in 1992. The program was aimed at meeting perceived development needs in Kenya, which it has done very well. Indeed, most of the computer science professionals in industry today have been developed through this program. Hundreds of students have been equipped with the prerequisite knowledge to handle computing and informatics needs of our society. To complement theoretical foundations learned and the practical skills gained from the ultra-modern laboratories students are required to go through an industrial attachment program not lasting less than eight weeks. The attachment involves carefully monitored work or service experience in which students have intentional learning goals and are accorded a chance to reflect actively on what they are learning throughout the experience. The attachment is strategically placed between semester 2 of year three and semester 1 of year four because by this time the student has been exposed to many principles in computing and informatics and requires to focus on real world problems and solutions.…

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 HISTORY OF SIWES The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is the accepted skill training program which forms part of the approval of minimum academic standard in the various degree programs for all Nigerian universities. Also the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme [SIWES] in Nigeria is a prerequisite to graduation from the tertiary institution in science related courses, engineering, agriculture and various other programmes. This is an effort to bridge the gap existing between theory and practical of engineering and technology, sciences, agriculture, management and other professional educational programs in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. The Student Industrial Work Scheme [SIWES] was initiated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973 as a means of harmonizing post-graduation endeavours. The scheme was therefore introduced to provide students with the much needed practical experience in order to promote their technical knowledge and serve as a means of exposure of students to industrial activities. The scheme requires students to go out to their various fields of expertise to gain experience which wouldn’t have been possible ordinarily in their schools. As the training programme goes on, students are exposed to different equipment and facilities allowing them practicalise the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in the lecture room. 1.2 AIM OF SIWES It is aimed at exposing students to equipment professional and work methods and serves as a way of safe guarding the work area and workers in the industries and other organizations. It is also aimed at promoting and strengthening the technical know-how of the students in order to develop their skills and…
