A dog Riley is 3 years old, but he acts like a much older dog. He has a personality identical to an older dog other than Pepper. These two dogs are around each other 24/7, but because they have different energy levels, they are not always doing the same thing. Rocky is turning seven years old, so he is not as active as he used to be. He likes to lie around and relax. Rocky still loves to play rough and run around, but he just does not do that as often as he used to. Yz just turned one a few months ago, so he is barely out of his puppy stage. Yz is very hyper, and loves to run, jump, and play. He can only be still for a little at a time, unless he is taking a nap, or sleeping for the night. Rocky’s endurance is weakening slowly, and he does not run around for as long as he used. Yz has all the energy in the world though, and his endurance is probably at its best, so he is always prancing and running around.…

Timothy is an avid runner “[who doesn’t run for health, but runs] to stay thin and [recently] to blow off steam” (Braun) due to the stresses of everyday life, such as the stress from work and the relationship with his fiancée. While out on a run one day, Timothy had stopped at an animal shelter to grab a drink of water from the fountain to cool down. Upon entering the shelter, he had encountered a “half husky and half Australian shepherd” (Braun) who had “one blue eye and one brown eye” (Braun). Timothy had no intention of adopting a dog that day. In fact, he didn’t adopt a dog that day. Timothy “thought about how much damage [a dog] could cause [in his] life (Braun). “The dog was nice, but having a dog would be like having a child” (Braun). For one reason or another, Timothy decided to take on the responsibility of adopting and caring for Dusty. The choice to adopt Dusty shows a nurturing characteristic of Timothy. Not only did Timothy decide to put his convenience aside, he took on an obligation showing a mature and responsible…

When choosing a dog, families should consider the temperament, physical size, and exercise needs of the breeds they are considering. Researching the characteristics of the dogs the families are considering is a great way to ensure the families ends up with a dog that will complement their family environment and lifestyle. Sadly, taking the time to truly research a dog before it is bought is something that very few owners practice. The deciding factor on which dog to buy comes down to the appearance of the dog without any thought given to the resources and time requirement for the specific dog. Buying a dog because it looks cute when it is a puppy could result in a headache later. The cute little puppy can turn into a large dog that needs to be walked a couple of hours a week or a dog that has a compulsive…

Heidi had been coming with us on trail rides since we started coming out to Ya Ha Tinda Ranch, about 6 years ago. She was the perfect trail dog, staying on the path, following the horse in front of her while staying out of the way of the horse behind her. The last couple years, as she aged, she started to forget the lethality of horses' hooves. She started doing things like dashing in front of horses or following too closely, or in one case, stopping dead on the trail and backing straight through the next horse's legs.…

Finally, the main difference in raising a puppy and an older dog is the older dog can be left on her own without being destructive whereas the puppy if left to her own devices goes crazy and into destruction mode. I know that it is the puppy’s curiosity that makes her that way, and her playfulness but it’s much easier to leave the older dog home alone than it is the puppy. To leave the puppy, I have to get the crate ready and put her in it and then hope when I come home that she isn’t covered in her own excrement.…
