Furthermore, the possibility of revolting against Nazi or Stalinist rule was nearly impossible for prisoners. For victims of Stalinism, exercising resistance endangered their lives, and for those under Hitler’s regime, exerting their will against the Nazi was rarely even considered. As part of Solzhenitsyn depiction of life as a prisoner, he explains the potential dangers of engaging in acts of resistance against the Stalinist government by stating “it was safer to keep dynamite during the rule of Alexander II than it was to shelter the orphan of an enemy of the people under Stalin.” This contrast serves as a measurement of the challenges that made resistance extremely difficult for victims. Likewise, corruption was key to the tenacity of authoritarian rule. As described by Solzhenitsyn, when houses were burned or bombed, Soviet people would “profit form those who were stricken” by stealing their possessions. Additionally, lying became a justifiable and common behavior among individuals within this regime, as it was the only means in which they could survive. One of the most shocking assertions the author makes is presented when he explains the difficulties of having to lie to children and how “the choice was really such that you would rather not have any children.” Similarly, Frankl addresses apathy as one of the major results of life at Nazi concentration camps. The conditions that prisoners had to face made the “blunting of the emotions and the feeling that one could not care any more” common symptoms among individuals. In a way, corruption and apathy were mechanism of self-defense for those who endured the difficulties and cruelties of Nazi and Stalinist rule. Finally, one of the common features of both regimes was the fact that they accustomed individuals to see and justify violent and brutal conducts.     Freedom. At some point in our lives we have all wanted a certain freedom. Whether it is freedom to do as you please or freedom to go explore the world. Though, most of us never got the chance to be free, and some of us might never have that chance. The book we studied in class is a classic memoir written by Elie Wiesel, a unforgettable novelist, titled Night. In this memoir Elie Wiesel is writing about his past life as a prisoner in a Jewish concentration camp along with his family. Wiesel writes about how he had suffered from being kicked out of his home in Sighet, having to split apart from his mother and his sister, Tzipora, and having to continue on to the next location with only his father by his side. Wiesel wrote about his tragedies whilst in the concentration camps; how he and his father were treated like animals because of their religion; getting beat up and abused each day. At first, reading the memoir did not interest me at all, I was bored within the first two chapters, however as I started reading more of the book I became more and more intrigued in his life tragedies. Reading about the awful events that had occurred in Wiesels’ childhood I felt heartbroken, no child or even adults should ever feel that much pain and depression from others, it is not right to be treated in such ways.     As the dust settled in Europe, collaborators were hung, sent running naked down the streets or imprisoned, while the resistance set out to define post-war Europe. The illusion of a clear distinction between Hitler’s henchmen and enemies shaped the psychology, language and power structures that are still present today. Collaboration and resistance, as categories of human behaviour, gained their historical relevance from the weight they carried after the war, rather than the limited part they played in bringing the conflict to an end. In reality, the decision to collaborate was, as choices always are, the individual’s response to his or hers perceived alternatives. It existed within every stratum, and along the entire scale of what is considered good and evil. It came in endless variations, and due to as many motivations. I will, however, argue that self-interest was the most important motivating factor. To avoid exaggerated emphasis on those in charge, I will return to the so called horizontal collaborators, who were often the first to be punished. Not only are their stories as personal as they can get, but their motivations can, with a tiny bit of imagination, be applied to every chunk of society.     The Holocaust is considered one of the worst genocides in history, known for it’s merciless killings and torture of Jews and other outcasts. The cruelness of the genocide can be witnessed first hand in the novel Survival in Auschwitz. Survival in Auschwitz was written by Primo Levi, an Italian Jew who was a prisoner in the concentration camp of Auschwitz when he was the age of twenty-four. He managed to leave Auschwitz alive, and dedicated the rest of his life to writing about the Holocaust and his experiences. Levi goes into detail about the horrors of the camp, and explains how prison effects how humans act morally. The Nazis degrade the Jews so deeply that they view them as animals, not important enough to receive basic human needs. Being treated as an animal takes a large toll on the normal ethics that the Jews practice outside of prison. It becomes evident how the prisoners change the way they act throughout their stay at Auschwitz. Because of being treated as non-humans, the Jews resorted to stealing and stopped helping others.
