Similarities Between Ancient Rome And Ancient Greece
Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece played an important role on how our modern society and architecture is today. They influenced ideas that were spread and shared all over the world like their architecture, entertainment, and government. The architecture in Rome included things such as Viae, aqueducts, and arches. Viae were roads that the romans created and that we have today, but in ancient Rome is was primarily used as military supply lines. Another architectural innovation that Rome created were the aqueducts. These aqueducts were used to carry water throughout the cities and inspired the invention of supplying every home with drinkable water in our modern world. The third architectural innovation the Romans gave us were the arches. The arch …show more content…
In ancient Rome they had a republic then switched to more of a monarchy and the Greeks had a democracy. Rome had the division of laws into Jus Gentium and Jus Civile. Jus Gentium (law of all nations) referred to the universal principles all people have, which are fundamental to all human beings. Jus Civile (civil law) would encompass all of the specific norms within a region. This is like our modern government in the sense that the laws apply to everyone and not just a specific group of people. Rome also had the corvee system which was popular within the empire. The system required subjects, usually peasants, to provide labor as a payment of tax. Rome’s form of government was a republic which influenced other form of government in our modern world. Rome’s republic allowed adult citizens to have control, primarily land-owning males. In Greece democracy was created and it was one of the most enduring contributions to the modern world. It gave power to the people and was comprised of three separate institution like today. In Ancient Rome they had the colosseum for entertainment which consisted of gruesome deaths to entertain the people. The purpose for the colosseum was to distract the citizens from politics and it’s comparable to today with other forms of entertainment distracting us from politics. In Ancient Greece they had dramas, which they used to show the world they lived in and what it meant to be human. This influenced what we have today in movies and plays. In conclusion, Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece played a major role in what we have today in entertainment, architecture, and government. They influenced many concepts and spread their ideas around the
