Aunt Felicia was like a helicopter, hovering over and shielding Tia, ready to swoop in and rescue her from any distress. In return Tia became very dependent on her mother and with time grew a very strong sense of entitlement. Growing up with a mother or father who tends to over parent can have a negative effect on the child, causing them to lose self-confidence as well as a decrease in self-motivation.
This high sense of entitlement can also be known as Trophy Syndrome. Trophy syndrome may occur when a child is constantly praised and rewarded for minimal work, or even just participation. For example I remember high school being somewhat of a struggle for Tia because her mother didn’t have the ability to “Helicopter” Tia as much. Tia was used to her mother being around and able to help her in her times of need due to her being the campus aide in middle school. Tia started to expect the same behavior from her teachers which didn’t actually work out as she planned. One Morning I spotted Tia storming angrily through the busy school hallways. Concerned, I asked Tia if everything was okay. Tia explained that her P.E. teacher, Mr. Green was failing her due to lack of participation in class. Tia was convinced that Mr. Green was out to get her. I doubted very highly that it was personal, but who was I to argue with …show more content…
Tia ended the semester with a low C, which was better than what she started with. Aunt Felicia thought this was the best work Tia had done, especially due to her “unfair circumstances”. She was given a watch as a gift because of her hard work, which in my opinion was undeserved. Tia is still working on becoming a more independent person as well as learning the value of hard work. I learned a lesson or two myself from a few of Tia’s experiences over the years. This has taught me to take a different approach in
