ABSTRACT

The main aim of this study is to make a fire retardant cloth using potassium carbonate and sodium borate conducted at Babag National High School, Babag I, Lapu-Lapu City, SY 2011-2012.

This study specifically seeks to: 1) make a fire retardant cloth using potassium carbonate and sodium borate as fire retardants; 2) test the effectiveness of the fire retardant cloth; and 3) make a fire retardant cloth.

This study uses the experimental method. The making of the fire retardant cloth is done by experiments. A solution was made and trial was tested by putting the different types of cloth like cotton, linen, and satin in a solution in order to achieve the desired output.

A wire loop was cleaned and dipped into the solution and held over the hottest part of the flame of a Bunsen burner. This procedure was completed for the each solution, cleaning the wire loop between each test to avoid contamination and recording and photographing each flame color and…

For wood, paper, cloth or plastic a Water Extinguisher should be used. For flammable combustibles use Foam Extinguisher. For an electric fire use Dry Powder or C02 Extinguisher. And finally for combustible metals C02 too, also a fire blanket could help. Once we’ve got the correct extinguisher we must pull the pin, aim the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the flames, squeeze the trigger holding the extinguisher upright and sweep it from side to side covering the area of fire. Then leave the area.…

The global fire protection community should incorporate wet chemical extinguishing systems as part of its essential technique in firefighting. Wet chemical extinguishing can be instrumental in combating the risk fires would have on employees and equipment in the workplace (Jones, 2009). It works by cooling and timely response would ensure that individuals are not affected adversely by heat during a fire out-break. There has been an increase in the improvement of cooking appliances, heating rates and industrial tendency to unsaturated oil. These are potential conditions for severe fires and wet chemical extinguishing would come in handy in mitigating such possibilities.…

The article Fire Dynamics: The science of Firefighting by Daniel Madrzykowski discusses how researchers have conducted controlled experiments and computer generated models to explain how changes in construction materials and fuel effect fire dynamics. The changes in fire dynamics calls for improved training, improved personal protective equipment, and a change in fireground tactics. Additionally, leadership in every department needs to acknowledge the changes, educate their members, and incorporate new fire-fighting practices to help protect firefighters and civilians.…

The article in which I selected focuses on scrubs clothing worn by nurses working in the healthcare environment. The study was conducted to see if certain clothing textures such as traditional cotton-polyester scrubs, silver-alloy embedded fibers, or a combination of embedded antibacterial materials showed a favorable difference over another when it came to being repellent against germs. Scrubs are worn to serve many purposes such as identify staff, easy accessibility, help easily identify containments if spilled on them but, most importantly they are thought to be cleaner than personal clothing due to the simple fact of high heat tempatures in which they can be washed. After running test on different scrubs and materials what was realized…

Firefighting is considered as one of the most challenging and dangerous profession due to the exposure of various hazards, chemically or physically, encountered by firefighters worldwide. The products of combustion during a fire consist of organic materials in which the primary chemical element is composed of carbon. The carbon compound evolves to carbon dioxide and water molecules when burned completely during complete combustion. However, combustion is occasionally complete. Incomplete combustion leads to formation of carbon monoxide (CO), thus making exogenous CO ever present at every fire (Stefanidou, Athanaselis, & Spiliopoulou, 2008).…
