Sialkot is a city in Pakistan situated in the north-east of the Punjab province at the foothills of snow-covered peaks of Kashmir near the Chenab river. It is the capital of Sialkot District. The city is about 125 km (78 mi) north-west of Lahore and only a few kilometers from Indian-controlled Jammu. The recorded history of Sialkot covers thousands of years. Sialkot has, since its foundation, changed hands from Hindu, Buddhist, Persian, Greek, Afghan, Turk, Sikh, Muslims and British rule to that of present-day Pakistan.

Sialkot is a city, near the Indian border, Pakistan. It is a rail junction and a major trade and processing center. Manufactures include sporting goods, processed foods, and ceramics. Textile weaving is also important. A fortress built in 1181 by Muhammad of Ghor and the mausoleum of Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion (see Sikhism), are in Sialkot. The city is also the birthplace of the philosopher-poet Muhammad Iqbal.

The district area, 2,067 sq mi [5,354 sq. km], stretches from the Ravi valley on the southeast to the Chenab River on the northwest. The population of the main city area is about 500,000 (0.5 Million) (est. 2001).
This city is centuries old. According to tradition, it was constructed by Raja Sul. After his death some 5000 years ago, there is a tradition that the dynasty continued for some 1500 years and then the country was flooded and remained one vast uninhabited region for about 1000 years.
(INTERESTING FACTS)
The popular belief is that it was re-founded in the reign of Vikramaditya of Ujjain by Raja Sáliváhan or Sálbán, who built the fort and city and gave the place its present name. It is believed that the name of the city means "Fort of the Sia", the Sia being a particular caste which founded the city in ancient times.

The Sialkot cricket team in Pakistan is also known as the Sialkot Stallions. Its home ground is Jinnah Stadium

    The present city was originally made up of seven small islands, composing mostly of mangrove forests and marshland dissected by rivers, streams and the sea.
