Shut Down Your Screen Week Analysis
Do you want your students to be more involved in thinking instead of using the internet to just look up the answers? Well there is a solution this problem, and it’s called “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” If one or your students are on their phone while doing homework, they can be easily distracted and lose concentration on what they were doing before they picked up their phones or checked an email. Students will be more focused on what they are doing making information easier to take in and understand. Plus, using the internet or any sort of technology can have terrible consequences such as, not being able to focus on anything at all. In the article that both Peter Norvig and Nicholas Carr wrote, which is, Is Google Making Us Stupid? it says, “By considering a wide range of information, we can arrive at more creative and informed solutions. Internet users are more likely to be exposed to a diversity of new ideas.” But, in reality, looking up ideas on the internet and using these ideas requires not thought process at all whatsoever. On top of not having to think, you are basically taking someone else's ideas and saying it was your idea. Students might as well not think anymore if they were going to just copy some ideas and use them without thinking.
Looking at all of the information on the effects of being on the internet or your phone too often (distractions), and having your students being able to think deeply, would you consider doing “Shut Down Your Computer Week”? If we don’t act quickly, then all of the students won’t have an understanding on why they shouldn’t be on their phones all of the time. Students will then see the internet as a useful tool instead of a dangerous and terrible
