I chose to view the movie Shrek which was produced in 2001. Having two small children, it is important for me to understand the value of what my husband and I allow them to view. To many, Shrek is simply a cartoon about a green ogre and a donkey, but Shrek has so much value. This movie can teach us important life lessons if we can open our eyes and see them. The film begins with a narrator explaining that a princess has been placed under a spell and locked away in a tower waiting for her true loves first kiss to free her. We then learn that the story is being read by an ogre reading a page out of fairytale book. Shrek is a large green ogre that lives in solitude in a tree stump in the swamp. In a nearby town a reward is placed on all captured fairytale creatures and ogres. A donkey who is running from the towns people finds Shrek. Shrek’s appearance scares off some townsmen who try to capture him. The donkey, played by Eddie Murphy, thinks he made an instant friend when meeting Shrek. Donkey goes to town and tells all the terrified fairytale creatures that they are safe with Shrek. Donkey takes the fairytale creatures to Shrek’s home in the swamp. Shrek becomes extremely angry with all of his visitors because he likes to be left alone. The fairytale creatures feel safe with Shrek. Shrek, played by Mike Meyers goes with Donkey, into the town of Duloc demanding to see Lord Farquaad, played by John Lithgow. Lord Farquaad sees Shrek from the balcony he is standing on and he tells the towns knights that whomever kills the ogre will be named champion. The champion will be the one who gets to rescue the princess locked away in a tower. Shrek and Donkey work together to defeat the knights. Lord Farquaad names Shrek the champion and sends him on his mission. If Shrek can defeat the fire-breathing dragon and return the rescued

Two main aspects of this scene to focus on is the interaction between Lord Farquaad and Shrek and also the use of Princess Fiona as an object of trade for Shrek’s reward. Traditional ranking of nobles and commoners are rooted within the Middle Ages, and although Shrek acts rather brutish and unpolished in Lord Farquaad’s presence, there is still an act of submission as depicted by Shrek’s delivery of Fiona. It was typical of knights in the middle ages to battle against one another or perform favors and acts of bravery in order to gain favor in the eyes of a King. Lord Farquaad’s use of Shrek as a way of obtaining Princess Fiona would then give Shrek an opportunity to gain favor in Lord Farquaad’s eyes so that his request of gaining back full ownership of his swamp would be granted. Due to the treacherous nature of retrieving Fiona, this would constitute as one of many acts of valor that many knights would partake in at the time.…

    Shrek: CCRF Violations

The CCRF is probably at the back of your mind whilst watching Shrek, but if one were to look deeper than the childish humour and the silly retorts, than one will find obvious and blatant violations of the CCRF. However, I don’t believe that the creators were making this movie to show examples of violations of the CCRF, but rather to generate large sums of money, but thats beside the point. In Shrek, there are numerous examples of violations of the CCRF carried out by the film’s antagonist, the ‘Short’ tempered Lord Farquaad. While Shrek is at its core, a children’s film, there are a number of prime examples of violations of the CCRF which deserve to be unearthed from beneath the mound of clichés and mind-numbing satire.…

    Shrek as an Epic Hero

The process of a myth begins with the character’s departure into their journey. Shrek finds his isolated life bothered when thousands of different fairytale characters are banished into his swamp by order of the obsessive, evil, fairy-tale hating Lord Farquaad. This is Shrek’s first call to adventure. Campbell claims, “One may be only casually strolling when some passing phenomenon catches the wandering eye and lures one away from the frequented paths of man.” This is sort of what happened to Shrek in that he was just living his life when the fairytale characters entered his swamp. Shrek announces to the fairytale creatures that he will go to see Farquaad to move them out of his swamp and back to where they came from. Shrek crosses the first threshold to go see Lord Farquaad and brings along a talking donkey. Upon arriving at the castle, Shrek and Donkey see a guard that represents the threshold guardian, but the guard runs away fearful of the ogre. Campbell speaks of the threshold guardian when he stated, “Beyond them is darkness, the unknown and danger.” Shrek and Donkey enter the mysterious castle and proceed to an arena. They realize they are now in the middle of a tournament. After defeating a…

Disney films are not for childrenWe were a generation that grew up with the Disney films. The Lion King, Snow White, Mulan, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and we could recall more of these famous stories without a second of hesitation. We enjoyed them, loved them, and most of us repeated our favourites like we could never grow tired of them. We loved their adventures, the world Disney films created for us. We adored the romance between the hero and the heroine and they were popular subjects to talk among friends. Yet despite all the fun Disney films brought us, hidden messages embedded in the films also came along at the same time.…

    The Sandlot Analysis

There are a few movies to choose from that has actually touched me personally. The one movie that had more of an impact was “The Sandlot”. The Sandlot showed tough times as a kid in the 1960s. The movie can be related to almost every kid. Being peer pressured by the people I call my friends, losing balls over the neighbor’s backyard, and being face to face by a big dog. These aren’t just situations that I face myself, but for most people in their childhood. Now, we will see how this relates to the movie’s editing, sound, and lighting.…
