Culture is a concept that we as sociologists regard as a central ingredient in human behavior. As an integral part of every society, culture is a powerful concept that creates a feeling of belonging and togetherness among the people of that society. The essential feature of culture is that it is learned and transmitted from one generation to the next. Every culture is different. The attitudes, beliefs, customs and traditions of one culture can be, and often are very different in other cultures. In studying culture the sociological imagination allows us as sociologists to examine and analyze culture through a variety of different lenses. A functionalist perspective of culture sees society as a stable, orderly system with interrelated parts that serve specific functions (Pope 1975). The view from a functionalist lens enables one to see…

Addiction is more of a psychological dependence. Addiction can make an individual feel a compulsion for a substance regardless of any negative consequences. While dependence is more of a physical need to use, an ongoing need to use psychoactive drugs. The tissues of the body actually require the presence of alcohol or other drugs to act and feel normally; and in return physically build a tolerance to the substance or substances. Ultimately the addiction aspect is more of a psychological need for a substance while dependence is both a physical and psychological need to use.…

I read the book called “Deep River,” which is written by Shusaku Endo, first published by Tuttle Pubishing in Great Britain, 1994. The book is translated by Van C. Gessel and is published in Boston, Rutland, Vermont, and Tokyo now. I chose this book to read because I was curious knowing more about the value of religion and spiritual ideas which I have not noticed closely before in reading. The theme of this book is the interaction between Chritianity and Japanese people, and I was sure I would learn new ideas out from it. Although it was originally written in Japanese, I thought reading in English would be interesting as long as it would give me an opportunity to better understand the delicate content of this story including religious thoughts without having fixed ideas from Japanese words. The one I was suggested to read, “Griftopia,” was about political journalist investigating financial crisis, but since I had no basic knowledge of economics and historical background of America, I predicted I would not be able to finish this book to understand the content thoroughly unless taking more time than provided days, researching on my lack of social, political, and financial knowledge as well as making my English level of reading comprehension suitable enough.…

The culture of Timbuktu was structured due to specific roles each member was given. Women and girls were responsible for the home and cooking. They could not have the privilege of education, for it was strictly for men. Girls would marry at 13 and were raised in preparation of being a wife and mother. Timbuktu became a common meeting place for traders and travelers due to the location of the out of range floods of the Niger River. Islam spread through Africa by travelers and traders. Timbuktu became exposed to Islam and that influenced the people. Mansa Musa visited the city and built a mosque and university in his own honor, which remained a reminder for the religion he brought to the society in 1324. A major part of Timbuktu's culture revolved around education and sophistication. This began when African scholars became interested in the prosperity of the city and migrated there. By the beginning of the 12th century, it was a center for Islamic Learning that was recognized throughout the region. It had built 3 universities and many quaranic schools, which attracted more scholars. During the fourteenth century, Timbuktu was a rich cultural center. The beginning of this can be traced back to 1324, when the king of Mali, Mansa Musa, made his pilgrimage to Mecca via Cairo. In Cairo, merchants and traders were impressed by the amount of gold carried by the emperor. In 1354 Ibn Batuta wrote of his visit to Timbuktu and told of the wealth and gold from the region.…

Adam smith defined the subject matter of economics as the study of the causes of material welfare or as the science of wealth. Alfred Marshall in particular defined economics as the study of production, consumption, exchange and distribution of wealth by men engage in the ordinary business of life. Robinson however defined this subject matter as too restricted in scope to embrace all the facts. According to Robinson "Economics is the science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses". A satisfactory definition must combine both these conception of economics. We may define economics as social science concerned with the proper use and allocation of scarce resources for the achievement and maintenance of growth and stability.…

In the novel, Demian written by Herman Hesse, there are several events that lead up to the fact where Max Demian, one of the main characters, was an imaginary figure. Emil Sinclair, an additional main character, has a troubled relationship with Franz Kromer, who acted like a bully to Emil Sinclair. Since Sinclair could not pay back Franz Kromer, he was forced to become Kromer’s slave. He offered Kromer a silver watch which was broken, and a compass, but Kromer had denied the offer. Now, every time Kromer needed anything he whistled to signal Sinclair to do whatever Kromer wanted him to do. As the days passed Sinclair was getting sick of Kromer’s demands, and soon all of his misery came to an end as he met a boy named Max Demian. Max Demian had helped Sinclair overcome his dilemma with Kromer with just one conversation with him. Kromer is frightened as he sees Sinclair; “When he saw me he flinched, his face twitched and he turned away so as to avoid meeting me” (35). Why would Kromer flinch as he saw Sinclair? There is only one good explanation for that. As Kromer saw Sinclair he flinched and twitched, as if he saw Max Demian instead of Emil Sinclair. Usually Sinclair was the person to flinch when he saw Kromer, but this time it was vice versa. After Franz Kromer had a chat with Demian, he had felt fear whenever he saw Sinclair.…
