Should Zoos Be Shut Down
Modern people are familiar with zoos because it is a place where most of people get the knowledge of wild animals and natural environment. With the upturn of living standard, zoo has become a necessary facility of a city. However, controversies about whether the zoo should be shut down or not have become more and more serious. The objective of this essay is to find a solution of this problem. Both the supportive and opposed opinions will be discussed and a conclusion will be given at the end of this essay.
A great number of people who support the idea that zoos should be shut down hold the view that zoos change the environment of animals and this can make them die. In their opinion, the man-made environment in the zoo is really different from the natural environment. Most of the animals die during the process of adapting themselves to the man-made environment. Kiev zoo, one of the biggest zoos of former Soviet Union and the only zoo in Kiev Oblast, once met a problem caused by the environment which nearly made it close down [1]. Kiev zoo was once a favorite spot for families, but it began to deteriorate after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. The government did not have enough money to run the zoo. As a result, the man-made environment became worsen and worsen. Animals were kept in cages without fresh food and water, and almost half of them died. Though a new management system has been set for this zoo, the animal protection group still fights to shut down this zoo.
Another reason for shutting down the zoos is that the supporters think that animals are born free and human has destroyed their life. Peggy Daniels said in her book Zoos and Animals Welfare ‘Not only are zoo animals kept in grossly inadequate conditions, they are the blameless victims of profit-maximizing business practices that do not respect their physical, mental, or physiological welfare’ [2].
