Should You Tell Your Boss About A Mental Illness Essay
Everyone has scars. Now whether that is physical scars or mental, there still there. Disclosing a mental illness can be hard at times. There’s always that thought of what if they don't look at me the same, or worse, what if they think Im impaired or broken. The argument of disclosing a mental illness should never be brought up. Disclosing an illness should be a personal choice. Nobody’s perfect, wether that come to peoples mental health, or their physical health. That is how people with mental illness/disorders feel. They know they can do it and often times they are limited when their illness is exposed. In the article, “Should You Tell Your Boss About a Mental Illness?” by Roni Jacobson, he states “If you decide to share your mental health status with your boss or human resources manager, consider doing so soon-but not immediately- after being hired. In most situations, experts suggest waiting six months to a year…” In other words, you should develop a relationship with your employer and co-workers before disclosing because of the judgement and discrimination. There’s always a thought in the back of peoples heads that says, what if they judge you? You want to fit in don't you? When these thoughts come up, it might be hard to suppress them and tell someone about what you're struggling with. Jacobson states, “Historically, people who have revealed their mental illness at work have faced discrimination.” In other words, society has made it to where mental illnesses are scary and hard to understand. It isn't hard to understand at all, all that is needed to be known is that it is real, and people do struggle with mental illnesses.
