Should Violent Media Be Banned
Should violent media be banned?

Many teenagers are now being introduced into playing or watching violent media at very young ages and society are wondering if they should be concerned about it; they are wondering whether it can cause aggressive behaviour within the children/teenagers.

Violent video games and violent action films normally have age restriction son them so that children under the age of 15 or in some cases 18 cannot buy them. You see many teenagers with these games and movies as parents to buy the media for them, this can then be argued if they have parents consent it is okay for them to play them on the other hand the age restrictions are there for a reason and should be listened to. As well as being bought by parents, teenagers can also access violent media on the internet as it is very easy for them to download the material from the internet. Being able access the media so easily the age restriction does not have an effect for many teenagers. Popular games such as ‘Call of Duty’, ‘Gears of War’ and ‘Halo’ are played by teenagers everywhere and are said to be violent. These games do create violent images of death and seriously wounded characters and as the games are very interactive it could lead to the person playing these games to feel aggressive.

There has been psychological experiments been taken place that involve investigating aggression and how it has an effect. The study of Bandura shows how aggression can be intercepted by children just by watching a video. This is evidence that children do get influenced by others behaviours and supports that violent media should be banned. Albert Bandura (1977) tested 36 boys and 36 girls from Stanford University nursery ages between 3 and 6. Under controlled conditions, 24 boys and girls watched a male or female role model (according on the gender of the child) behaving aggressively towards a ‘Bobo doll’ they also made distinctive sound effects like ‘pow’ and ‘boom’. Meanwhile the other 24

(1).The problem is that in the last four decades, the government and the public health amassed an impressive body of evidence identifying the impact of media violence on children. Since 1969, when President [Lyndon] Johnson formed the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence, the body of data has effectively grown and grown and it leads to an unambiguous and virtually unanimous conclusion: media violence contributes to anxiety, desensitization, and increased aggression among children. When children are exposed to aggressive films, they behave more aggressively. And when no consequences are associated with the media aggression, children are even more likely to imitate the aggressive behavior.…

Media does not help in this constant debate since many feel as though outlets such as TV shows, movies and games promote violence especially in youth. However in studies where children were observed before and after viewing violent shows on TV, they did become more aggressive meaning there is a correlation between watching TV and acts of aggression but that connection doesn’t necessarily mean watching that particular show caused it to happen. Meaning a child acting out in violence could have been acting out on his aggression but not because he saw it happen. ‘A conservative conclusion is that mass media violence has a small effect on real-life violence that is eclipsed by other influences… we should remain skeptical of mass media effects until the empirical evidence becomes compelling…’ (Barkan, 2007, pp. 290-291)…

The video games phenomenon is somewhat new in this modern society. Although they often to be entertaining, the contents have become more violent and disturbing as computing technology has become much more advanced. These days, the popularity of violent video games has caused an increase in controversy. Parents and experts feel that some games are just too violent and they think that the violent will spill over into the real world. However, I strongly believe violent video games do not cause an increase in aggression in adolescents. In fact in many ways violent video games benefit the children that are playing them.…

One major reason that violent video games make teenagers more violent is that they are active play. Active play is any activity from which one derives amusement, entertainment, enjoyment, or satisfaction by taking a participatory rather than a passive role (Active Play Definition). People retain much more information when something is as interactive as a violent video such as Call of Duty or Battlefield, so when teens continue to play these types of games, they get engrained in their brains that this is what they need to do. For example, when learning how to fly a plane, would you rather read a book, watch a television program, or use a video game flight simulator? (Bushman)…

In the early 1960s Albert Bandura conducted his famous “Bobo Doll” experiments, in which children were shown videos of someone attacking a plastic clown known as a Bobo doll (Isom, 1998). Many of the children exposed to these videos later imitated the same violence they had seen demonstrated in the video and continued to reproduce that violent behavior even months later (Isom, 1998). These results led Bandura and others to conclude that the children had learned the behavior from the video and were modeling their behavior accordingly. Today many people continue to claim that exposure to violence in the media will invariably lead to similarly aggressive behavior in children. However, by the time the average child graduates elementary school, he will have witnessed more than 8,000 murders and 800,000 violent acts on network television (Feldman, 2013, p. 188). Clearly, not all children who view these acts become violent and aggressive, so there must be mitigating factors at work. While excessive exposure to media violence can be detrimental, there are far more important factors that influence a child’s behavior and, when properly monitored, media can have a beneficial impact as well.…

One of the most famous experiments Bandura is credited with is the Bobo doll experiment. This experiment examines Bandura’s theory that aggression has three aspects—how the aggression develops, what provokes the behavior and what elements determine that an individual would resort to aggressive behavior in a similar situation in the future. While conducting this experiment, Bandura had a group of children watch a video where an actress is attacking a plastic clown. The aggressive behavior shown includes the actress punching the doll, hitting it with objects and hurling it around the room (Bandura, 1976). Next, these children were placed in a room that had similar toys shown in the video, but they were not allowed to touch the toys. Consequently, the children became upset with this restriction and after a length of time, the researchers found that 88% of the children exhibited the same aggressive behavior witnessed on the video. What is more disturbing is that eight months later a resounding 40% of the same group of children exhibited aggressive behaviors that were similar to their previous conduct (Isom, 1998).…

There is much more fear and violence in the world over all now, then there was twenty years ago. This reflects on a more fearful and violent society. These games are being used as a reason for kid's violent behaviors and actions. Video games were originally intended for entertainment, and they still should be. They are not a "guide" to violence, or a violence enhancer. If these games are now "too violent" then don't buy them. There are ratings for a reason, and you can even check the rating for every game online.[1] The ratings are as follows: early childhood, everyone 10+, mature, rating pending, everyone, teen, and adults only. The experiments are important because it sparked many more studies on the effects of violent media on children. In the experiment, children were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group was exposed to a video of a woman attacking a Bobo doll, while the other groups of children were not exposed to any video. Bandura wanted to measure how many aggressive acts a child would commit after being exposed to someone else eliciting this kind of negative behavior. Bandura then placed each child, one by one, in a room with several toys, including a Bobo doll. He observed that the children who watched the video did not play with any other toys except for the Bobo doll, and they also imitated the same aggressive behavior the woman did in the video. Moreover, this experiment shows that children are likely to imitate a behavior whether it is a positive or negative behavior.…

Absolutely, I believe TV, videogames, or even just watching the people you live with or around a lot can influence aggressive behavior. In a study children were shown films of aggressive behavior. The ones who were punished in the films for being aggressive those kids were less aggressive then ones who saw aggressive behavior being rewarded and thought it was okay. (Morris & Maisto, 2013, p. 276). About 136 studies were conducted on videogames and how they influence aggressive behavior. It was a clear outcome that for sure playing violent videogames can increase aggressive behavior and decrease empathy kind of behavior. (Morris & Maisto, 2013, p. 276) Kids who watch at least 2 hours of TV a day will witness at least 8000 murders, and 100,000 other acts of violence. Cartoons now have about 20 acts of violence an hour. (Morris & Maisto, 2013, p. 312). Violence is everywhere, in everything we watch, see, even then rated G kid’s movies there is some kind of violence. It’s just teaching your children the wrong and right way of things. It’s hard to avoid it and avoid them seeing it, so the best thing to do is teach and talk to them before they get the idea that it is okay do those things or act like people they see. Violence and aggressive behavior will always be around, no matter what. But it is best to learn about it and teach those around you or yourself, and help…
