Should The Retirement Age Be Raised?
Many countries all over the world are contemplating in the process of raising the retirement age for their national systems. Some countries have already taken steps to address the issue. From 2009, Singapore began raising the age from 55 to 65 within the next couples of years. In the U.S and Germany, workers can plan to retire at 67 as late as 2050, and in Japan and Mexico at 65. Italy and Denmark are the only two countries which are expected to raise their pension age to 69 by 2050. Proposing an appropriate age for retirement is one of the most sensitive, complicated concern and affects all aspects of society. So, should the retirement age be raised? However, the state of retirement age should not be raised for two reasons relate to workers’ benefits and the increasing of unemployment rate.
First of all, increasing the state of retirement age can affect workers’ benefits. Working for extra years influences workers’ health. Government Relations and Policy(2016) argues that because of the health condition, not every worker could go on their job in the elder years. At the age of 55, people start to face with many healthy problems, especially many geriatric diseases. Moreover, people should not work for some kind of manual jobs and jobs which demand working in hazardous place for a long time, because these jobs can make workers’ health worse and lead them to suffer many diseases. Aged employees may be able to take more mature decisions than their younger counterparts. They also have decades of experience behind them. If they stop working after they reach 60 or 65, it is sheer wastage of knowledge acquired over decades. Therefore, it is advisable that governments and companies design special employment schemes for older people. Their knowledge and experience could be used to train fresh employees.
However, not every kind jobs need the seniority. There are many kind of blue-collar jobs that are not appropriate for old workers. Because of the health condition, they cannot work more efficiently than the young workers. Government Relations and Policy(2016) believed that it is a challenge for older workers to get use to the change of technology so it is not necessary for employers to keep them when professional young workforces can do those jobs. The employers also need young workforces to bring more new perspectives to the jobs. Some others think that lengthening the age of retirement can help workers to support for their family’s income. On the other hand, after a long time devoting for working , they are deserved to enjoy the life more than continue to work. Additionally, they are not healthy enough to take charge of working every day and it is better for them to relax,

    In 1946, America received its first round of baby boomers that continued for the course of 18 years in which more than seventy-nine million babies were born. With that being said, most of the first round of baby boomers are turning 66 this year while the last flood of baby boomers will turn 48 (About.com.Geography ).
