Should Teenagers Work While They Are Students?
It is true that is some countries teenagers have jobs while they are still students. I support this idea and believe that it can help the teenager a lot in his present and future life. Self-reliance is an important lesson of life. People need to learn it at some point of time. Teenagers who have jobs while they are studying learn to fend for themselves. They may use the money earned to pay their school fee or may use it as their pocket money. They learn how difficult it is to earn money. This will make them appreciate the efforts put in by their parents to support the family.
Teenagers who have part-time jobs while they study get some valuable work experience. Most of the employers will be appreciative of the work experience an individual has. For example, if an individual applies for the job of a lecturer in a college and has experience as a Teaching Assistant in his college, he will certainly have a better chance of getting the job. Thus, the work experience that the teenagers get while studying will help them to get a job in their later life. Sharing of responsibility is something that teenagers will learn when they work part-time along with their studies. They will learn to share the workload and responsibilities with their parents and other family members. This will certainly ease the load on their parents and will help the family as a whole. For instance, if a family has two children who go to school, parents may feel it difficult to support both of them for their education. In case, one of them works part-time and supports him self to some extent, the parents can divert more resources towards the other child and get him proper education. Thus, the family as a whole is benefited. It may even improve the understanding and coordination between the siblings. Thus, in my opinion part-time jobs undertaken by teenagers along with their studies help them by making them self-reliant and independent. It also makes them more responsible towards their family and

If an individual can work from home, this can assist with child care. A parent who works at home can still provide child care and be working therefore enhancing economic wellbeing as this can save money. This can also enhance emotional wellbeing as a parent is still able to be there for their children and be creating a bond. Economic wellbeing is also further enhanced by saving money on travel expenses e.g. petrol or public transport. With flexible and negotiable leave arrangements an individual is able to take time off work when need be to meet family needs e.g. taking a child to the doctors or attending an awards ceremony at school. Regular quality part time work can assist in providing stability for a family so an individual can have the needed money to get by each week e.g. to pay rent, bills and buy food. Part time work also means that an individual can have more flexibility in work hours and easily get time off to assist with family expectations e.g. a mother can easily get time off to look after her children if the fall ill. Career breaks are also an important part of flexible work patterns as this can allow a parent to take a few years out of their career to look after children and help build a family before returning to work. Job share can also enhance family expectations as an individual can be at home more to look after children enhancing emotional wellbeing of individual and children or can give an individual time to recover from injury or illness enhancing physical wellbeing. Staying at home to look after children instead of sending them to school, can also save money, enhance financial wellbeing of a…

Learning is very important tools for many people and many people know that study and getting all the experience and knowledge of what they are learning is a tool to be successful in the real world. Some people think that learning is not important to them, but others disagree because it is providing people tools and knowledge to learn based on whatever they are doing and what they have been taught from. However, we learn because it some things that it is in our DNA, which is requiring us to learn, but working is another way for people to learn by getting “hand on” experience. Amitai Etzioni wrote, “Working at McDonald’s” to indicate how high school students having jobs at their early young ages it is bad for them. Etzioni mention that, “two-thirds…

In the past and even now, people have been discussing if the State of Florida should raise the age for students in school. Students should stay in school until 18 for two reasons. One reason is because they will get a higher education. Another reason is because they will get a better job and income. On the opposing side, some people argue that students should not stay in school until they're 18 because classroom issues arise from these students. However, there are many more significant reasons for students should stay in school until 18.…

After reading this essay by Amitai Etzioni, I could see why he is promoting teenagers to pay more attention to their academics and education rather working at fast food restaurants like McDonalds. He provides many studies done to prove his thesis clearly. One of the few studies is a 1984 study by Ivan Charper and Bryan Shore Fraser which says that teenagers do not pay attention to what skills they develop because they only care about finishing their working hours and earning money. Another study by A. V. Harrell and P. W. Wirtz in 1980 which said “ among those students who worked at least 25 hours per week while in school, their unemployment rate four years later was half of that of seniors who did not work”( Axelrod and Cooper 281). Etzioni argued that many of the students who worked part time were end up unemployed or they were had a low skilled job. Etzioni provides appropriate support for his essay by using statistics data like “58 percent of seniors acknowledged that their jobs interferes with their school work” (Axelrod and Cooper 282). These studies do provide a strong argument but these studies do not show or tell about the circumstances that force certain teenagers to work at fast food restaurants.…

I remember that when I was a little boy in the elementary school, I got a great deal of homework explanations from my parents. They only used to explain and giving me hints and let me do my homework many times until I get it right. In addition, they give me more work for practicing. As I got older they started backing off on me and let me do all my school stuff by myself. I think they did the right thing and I would do the same thing if I have my own kids. I believe that parents and tutors should not do the kids’ work. However, they should help them and give them more work for practicing than their homework.…

I seriously had never looked at it in the way Amitia put it. I think it is good for a teenager to have a job because it helps them appreciate life more. They actually see the worth of items. I never looked at it as it was not teaching a teenager anything. I am still going to stick with my theory though, because teenagers who come from two parents homes and are used to their parents purchasing everything, this teaches the teenager to appreciate their parent’s dollar. I would agree though that the teenager who does not have parents could definitely fall into the category of purchasing things they should not. They will also fall into the category of not saving and will never learn. Some teens will come from…

Some teenagers that attend high school classes early worry about their sleep schedule all the time. Most of us attend school for seven hours a day and are tired once we get home. A question most students ask is "Why not come in too school later?" but is it worth it ? Classes should not be later in the day because of limited time after school, students will still go to sleep late, and it keeps them prepared for the real world. First off, changing classes to a later time will only give the students less time in the afternoons for things they want too do. For instance, students in high school have a lot of homework to complete once they get home so it will be harder for them to complete it within the time they have to do while at home. When you attend high school, sports becomes…

Instead, they choose to drop out and find it may be better to go straight to working to help their families out with their financial problem. Poverty often causes hard times and, “roughly 30 percent of students who drop out of school between the ages of 16 and 18 are working in a variety of jobs”(Rosales). Clearly, these students work to support their family in low-income communities. Most also feel it is a waste of time and others want to attend school, yet don’t have the opportunities to stay. Not all students from low-income families drop out to work, but for some their work hours may run into school hours. And for the low-income students work may be more crucial. They feel as though giving up on their education to help out their family is their final option. This decision of dropping out of high school will cost them all of their life’s potential. Because they did not receive a good education, they will most likely work low paying jobs throughout their live. These students are trading their futures for a cyclical they will have to live financial problem they have with for their whole life. If a student does not finish high school to work, “these workers usually fill low-skilled jobs and earn approximately $9,500 a year. About half work 40 weeks or more a year averaging 31 hours a week... On average, working youth contribute almost 22 percent to the family budget while approximately 10 percent of these teen workers contribute more than half”(Scott). Students who are under these circumstances work an average of 31 hours a week this does not allow them to focus on school and receive a proper education. Although they do not earn much money a year, it does make a difference. But is it really worth…

Johan Cruijff once stated, “Every disadvantage has its advantage.” This famous quote leads to the issue of whether students should work or not work during high school, which has been a controversial hot topic in the Parent/Teacher Association. Working during high school may affect students’ school performance, yet working also provides invaluable working skills. According to the short article, “Part-Time Work Ethic: Should Teens Go For It?” by Dennis McLellan, “80% of high school students had held part-time jobs by the time they graduated” (270). Statistics show that the majority of the high school students held a position in a job during high school, and these students still graduated successfully.…

Department of Labor, 2000). Furthermore, even though most teens don’t have any financial responsibility of house, car payments and health insurance to worry about-because parents cover that, there are many potential benefits for them having a part-time job. Having a pay check will also help them learn money management skills, and with parents allowing them to go thru overspending with not a practical purchase, this too can help them think twice next time they want to overspend. It’s better to learn when young instead of in adulthood. It can also help them stay out of trouble with friends or avoid getting into any dangerous situations if they must go to work the next morning. Teaches them to invest a lot of their time in going to work and are less likely to spend their time frivolously or waste their money on trivial things. They will also use the reason of a job to keep themselves busy and stay away from teenage…
