Should Sports be Coed?
Even though girls and boys might not get along with each other at first, sports should be coed because the teammates will learn to work together, motivate each other, and learn other social skills. There is too much separation between males and females in some sports and other activities, it’s becoming a problem. It’s a problem because now there are too many gender stereotypes and negativity in the world. Exclusion of some genders from different sports has happened too. Different genders have different abilities, such as speed, agility, defense, and when you combine them, you get a really neat (cool), diverse team. I have been on a Coed Cross Country team, and they pretty much tell you run, motivate, run, motivate, repeat. I didn’t even have to do anything nice during the cross country meets, and random people at random times would encourage random people by saying, “Good Job,” or, “Keep Going! You got this!” Sometimes, even when I passed someone, the person I passed would encourage me anyway. So, I had first-hand experience on coed teams, and we all motivated each other because there was no point in saying something negative to each other, and I’m sure any other team would do the same. The players will learn social skills. As Steve Sampsell said in Kid Sports Magazine, “Learning to view the opposite gender as a friend and not something intimidating is something kids can take with them through life.” Instead of thinking the opposite gender as something different, eventually they will get used to it. they won’t see others as different because of what gender they are, but their abilities and talents. That’s what makes us different, not gender. Sports should be coed for the many reasons stated above. The players will have to figure out how to work as one, diverse team. The teammates will motivate each other in positive ways, and dispel negativity. They will learn other social skills, such as not reacting to the other gender in any different ways. And who knows? Maybe soon the sports we watch on TV will include both genders
