Consider the actual case of the parents who conceived a child for the express purpose of producing a bone marrow donor for their teenaged daughter who had leukemia. Doctors advised the parents that a bone marrow transplant was the only hope of saving their daughter’s life. Unable to find a compatible donor match, the parents took the desperate step of having another child. In 1991, bone marrow from the specially conceived child, then just over one year old, was transplanted to her nineteen-year-old sister. Can the parents’ action be morally justified? Explain. In my personal opinion, there is no right or wrong reason for having a baby. Some people have babies because they are trying to fix a marriage, others to fill a void in their lives, some do it to pass on their genes and their family name, and others do it to build a family and a happy home. This was the only option that these parents had in order to save their teenage daughter. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and if the choice comes down to watching your daughter die a slow painful death, or bringing new life into this world, with the hope of saving your daughter’s life, all while adding to the family, I believe that everyone would choose the same option that these parents chose. I can say that with confidence, I know my parents would choose the same decision, and if I were in this situation, I would do the same for my family.
