SHOULD MILTARY SERVICE BE MANDATORY FOR MALES The recurring debate over mandatory military service has been revived as the U.S. all-voluntary military force is stretched to its limit in the war on terrorism. I recently returned home from the military on an honorable discharge. I also served two years in Korea and learn that all Korean males had to serve a mandatory two years of service. I personally think it would be good for every male to at least serve one year of military service within 10 years of high school completion or after the age of 18. I feel there are a lot of pros and cons associated with the subject. Some of the pros I feel with having a mandatory military is people will have a better respect for our country, and people will be stronger both mentally and physically. I think people having to leave their kids and losing the freedom to choose would be some of the cons of a mandatory military. Many countries in the world today still force their men, and in some cases women to go into the service. Iran, Greece, Russia, South Korea, and Egypt to name a few still have a two year mandatory service for males. I had a lot of Korean friends who took time out from work or college to come back to Korea and serve their military. They told us it was a disgrace to their families not to serve their military duties. They said it is important for their country for all males to have military readiness just in case North Korea attacks. People need to be ready to fight and defend their country if a war breaks out. I feel no country would even think of invading us if every male and voluntary female in our nation knew how to fight, and react to a real combat situation. I feel it would result in utter chaos for the
invaders. We should use other countries as an example of how having a mandatory military for males would make our country strong as a whole. One of the major factors I think of having a mandatory military is that it would teach the
