Should College Start Off Their Lives And Careers?
In 2012, one in every three college graduates had a job that required a high school diploma or less. So why are these young americans starting off their lives and careers by getting an education that will bury them in debt and doesn’t guarantee a worthy job once they’re done. People say college is necessary if one wants to get a good job, but I believe college is just a lure to trap young adults in debt early off in their careers. Student loan debt is crippling to graduates, many graduates have jobs that do not require college degrees, and there are people who have succeeded without college degrees. Why should somebody throw themselves into a hole of debt if they are going to leave college and go straight into a job that doesn’t require that type of education. As of 2008, 17 million graduates were in a position that did not require a college education. That is a pretty big number of individuals who are in debt and didn’t even use it to their advantage. Sure you will make 30 to 40 percent less than someone in a job that requires a degree, but their job is probably much more tedious than others. One should go into a career that they enjoy, not just a job that makes a substantial amount of money. We’re talking billionaires who started off with a simple idea and made something of it. People like Ellen Degeneres, Michael Dell, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg all either never went to college or did not finish their degrees. This goes to show that people can make a good living for themselves without going to college. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 30 fastest growing jobs between 2010 and 2020, five do not require a high school diploma, nine of them require a high school diploma but no need for a college degree.
