Should Alcohol Be Made Illegal?
The world’s most dangerous, deadly and diabolical drug is readily available at our fingertips. A drug that sentences approximately 5,475 people to death each year is a legal substance. In fact, currently in Australia it plays a major role in our iconic Australian Identity; our drinking culture. Alcohol is a drug, and it’s time we stop looking at it through rose-coloured glasses and see it for the life destroying substance it is. It is a recreational drug that has a profound negative effect on the human body; specifically the nervous, digestive and excretory systems. Alcohol should be made illegal because people under the influence of this drug have an increased likeliness of undertaking risky behaviours, alcohol places a burden on the health …show more content…
Alcohol consumption has a negative impact on every system of the body but the system that it causes the most damage to is the excretory system. The excretory system is made up of numerous organs that work in unison in order to remove waste from the body and is essential for good health (Health Advisor, 2018). According to the National Kidney Foundation, regular alcohol consumption has been found to double the risk of developing chronic kidney disease, which is not cured with time. The kidneys are an essential part of the Excretory system as they filter harmful substance; a prime example being alcohol. When alcohol is consumed the kidneys work actively in order to filter the substance. This causes changes in the function of the kidneys and alters their ability to filter blood (National Kidney Foundation, 2018). However, not only does alcohol effect the kidneys ability to filter blood but it also effects the body’s ability to regulate fluid and electrolytes (National Kidney Foundation, 2018). This causes symptoms such as; swelling of body tissues, such as feet, legs, hands, and face (School of Public Health, 2018). Alcohol should be made illegal as it causes lifelong damage that can’t be reversed; specifically regarding the Excretory system.

In conclusion, it would be in our nations best health interest to make alcohol an illegal substance. This is because people under the influence of this drug have an increased likeliness of undertaking risky behaviours, alcohol places a burden on the health system and this substance causes life long damage that can not be reversed.
