Short Story 'Keep On Ruckin'
Keep on Ruckin’
Crack! I felt the air being forced out of my lungs as I hit the ground. Dazed and gasping, I struggled to protect the ball from the hands of my opponents for those critical moments until help arrived. It came. I saw a blur of green and orange as my team-mates reached the skirmish and threw off my assailants. As a familiar hand swept the ball up and away, the action moved on. For half a moment, I lay there, aching from the tackle and burning from the exertion, but my job was not over. I dragged myself to my feet and followed my brothers back into the fray. I knew that in rugby, as in life, you’re going to get knocked down, but success is about always getting back up.
It might seem strange to some people that I had willingly thrown myself into

We have to tell them that it’s not OK to keep missing practices and hanging the rest of us out to dry.”
“Yeah, I see what you’re saying, but right now guys can just show up to games without coming to practice and they’re gonna play, cos we need every-body we can get…”
We realized that we needed a plan to get more people involved and invested in the team, and by the time we’d drained our last Lone Star’s we had one. Over the next few days we got to work, hard. We both started hassling our team mates for their lack of commitment and actively recruiting from our friends and colleagues, we even went out and put up posters all across the island. We kept on running practices, hassled everyone a bit more and organized socials to build up the team off the pitch too.
At the following practice, we had seven instead of two. It wasn’t great, but it was a start, and we knew that big changes didn’t happen overnight. We stuck to our guns through those summer months, and by the time the new season came around, at the end of August, we had more than 20 guys showing

    2. This article has changed my perspective on the game as it explains in detail how to become a better and more effective rugby play or in any sport. This story relates to my perspective on fishing as I need to know many things about it to be able to catch fish but not only fish, the big ones and certain species. If I didn’t know what I did on fishing than I would not be able to win tournaments nor hold lake records for the largest weight of the species to come out of that lake. I have related something’s that had been said in this story to rugby but I had never thought about the thinking and strategizing parts of the game usually its run pass or crash as we carry out doing until senior years where we become learning more complex plays and what…

When I stood at the bottom I did not think I could make it. half way up, I knew that I could not make it. Now, standing at the top, I look behind me at the amazing challenge that I have just conquered. Not only is the hill at Eau Claire an infamous feat that every student must traverse, but it is also a metaphor for every hardship that has entered into my life. One hardship I have faced, was my sports injuries during high school. My junior year track season started off being the best experience i’ve had. Unfortunately, this time was cut short. I ripped a ligament in my leg ending my entire spring season. I was angry at the world asking, “why me”. However, I knew I still had a team depending on me. Day in, and day out, I would show up to practice…

A cold sweat began to bead at the base of my neck as I urged the muscles in my knee to work their way through the set of squats my physical therapist had asked me to perform. My appointment was scheduled at seven in the morning, but already I could feel the adrenaline rushing up and down my spine as I watched the sun rise over the waking city through the large paneled windows of the gym. Sharp pain shot up the inside of my right knee as I slowly lowered myself, making it difficult to continue the squats. As I pushed the muscles in my knee to lower myself further, I gazed intently at the wall in front of me for inspiration. A quote I had learned to cherish over time as my personal mantra adorned the wall, reading, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." With these powerful words lodged into the back of my mind, I dropped my body into an even lower squat and continued to complete the set with strong determination to get back to soccer, the sport…

I made my own decision that I would continue to play football, after I got done with recovery. Probably asking in your mind,”Well why do you have to go to rehab?’’ Good question, It was my first game back from my first mishap, where I dislocated my shoulder. I had been playing a little that night, but not a whole lot because it was my first game back and I didn't know much about the position I was playing. It was kickoff, and I was on the very end of the field, in my position ready to make the tackle, bound and determined i was gonna make it. I made the tackle, but it didn't go the way i had planned it to go. Instead of making the tackle and standing up and cheering with the team, I made the tackle and laid on the ground in so much pain i thought…

Almost anyone knows who plays a sport how physically and mentally demanding it is. However, as my coach walks up to the field, I realize even more how much we have to step it up this season compared to last. First of all, we all have a mandatory duty to arrive a half and hour early to practice to run an extra warm up mile, run sprints to end each practice, and with so many newcomers we cannot afford to fool around. Our coach has made it crystal clear to us that she wants us to be strong competitor amongst our league. As well, as returners to the team we have an additional responsibility to mentor the first years and teach them how to train hard even outside of our practices.…

Sustainability is the idea that everything must have a healthy cycle that ensures its entity will remain alive. This can be applied to any aspect of life, from economics to cooking. Rugby requires the ideals of sustainability as well in order to become a prominent component in America’s high school sport field, as well as survive as a sport. A hindrance to the sustainability of rugby is student athletes’ perception of the sport and the injuries associated with it. Concussions and similar injuries are a significant deterrent for students wanting to join the sport. Many are frightened by the possibility of irreversible brain damage, despite the data declaring that a highly unlikely outcome. The false idea that rugby is an extremely dangerous activity with no regulation to prevent injury scares away potential players. In a survey that I conducted, high school age athletes were questioned about their knowledge or experience with rugby and concussions, the findings showed that three out of every four were unaware that rugby has a lower concussion rate than similar contact sports. Another reported trend revealed more than half were not aware that rugby is a safe contact sport (Richey). At Hudson High School, the location of the survey, the rugby club is not a school sponsored sport, due to the lack of school awareness and participation. With similar situations occurring across the country,…

Although he may have meant it in a different way, it highlights something missing in my instructions to my players in the past. Simply, it is about them. It is their time. The game is their time. It is their time to be kids, be players, compete, have fun, succeed, or fail. In the end, it is just about them. This seems obvious, as “it is about the kids” is about as cliché as it gets, but how often do coaches…

Contact sports have been a part of school age children’s life for a long time in America. Whether it be football, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, or the recent addition to American sports, rugby. Millions of children in middle school or high school have worked hard and enjoyed playing. In recent news articles contact sports have been deemed bad for children. Doctors have been studying the statistics and have come to the conclusion that children have been developing physical injuries resulting from certain types of contact sports. One of the new findings from these studies is that once a person especially a child receives a concussion, the probability that they will get another is a lot greater. Recently children have died from concussions, which they have received from playing contact sports. The future of contact sports will benefit greatly from these studies. With every study they preform, the more safe guards that can be developed means the fewer children will be injured. Most contact sports do have an element of physical danger, but if the coach and the players work together the injuries can reduce in number. There will still be the occasional injury, that’s the price the player pays for the type of sport they are in. Even though contact sports can be dangerous, it does have its benefits. Contact sports provide physical activity, teach discipline, and develop intelligence.…
