Short Story Essay
How do the writers interest and satisfy the readers?

In this essay, I will be analysing three short stories and will be explaining through my writing how the stories interest and satisfy the readers. I will express the aims of the stories through the eyes of my writing and evaluate the short stories in detail. The stories that I will be analysing are all set in different places. The first short story I will be focusing on is “The Sniper”. This is a story written by Liam O’Flaherty, which is set in a city called Dublin situated in Ireland. The genre for this story is Civil war. The message that the writer is trying to give through his writing is ‘‘anti war’’, the writer is giving the readers the impression that war is bad and it shouldn’t happen. The second story that I will focusing on is “The Landlady”. This story is written by Roald Dahl. This story is set in a place called Bath situated in England. The stories genre is suspense, for the reason that, throughout the story the reader keeps the secret hidden from the readers about what is going to happen to Billy Weaver. The third and final story that I will be focusing on is “Country Lovers”. This story is an interesting which is set in South Africa on a farm. It mentions the situation between white people and black people during apartheid and also deals with the romance between Paulus and Thebedi. It indicates the racist society during apartheid in South Africa.
Liam O’Flaherty cleverly interests the readers in the opening paragraph. Flaherty enthusiastically created a powerful atmosphere in the first paragraph to interest the readers. He does this by first describing the darkness of the city using the first few lines of the first paragraph. He uses phrases such as “June twilight faded into night” and “Dublin lay enveloped in darkness”. The words “night” and “darkness” obviously indicate that it is night time in Dublin and its dark. This also portrays that the place is treacherous and evokes the feeling of

Writers use techniques to position the audience to compare the responses of the characters to convey the guilt and innocence. In ‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson and ‘The Wife’s Story’ by Ursula Le Guin, both authors use situational irony, point of view and setting to carry the innocence of the characters to the readers, displaying the emotions being exposed.…

In the short story "A&P" author John Updike describes in detail what a boy's infatuation with the opposite sex can lead him to do. John Updike goes into great description about the setting. He also makes it a point to be very vivid when he uses characterization. He gives the characters names that subtlety describe their personalities and lets the reader make assumptions and accusations on Sammy's motivations for his quitting his job at the grocery store.…

Literature contains an interesting plot that should include a situation between two things, which is called conflict. Conflict is a very important element in literature. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character goes through many conflicts to survive. In Richard Wright’s “The Rights to the Streets of Memphis” a boy named Richard is kicked out of his house to buy the groceries, but a gang tries to beat him up on the way. The boy has to build up his courage and face the gang. “Poor people put a low value on themselves and their efforts” (Daymond John). This represents the great work many underprivileged people must go through to earn simple things that would be easy to acquire for people of a wealthy society. People trapped in a lower class have a difficult time attaining happiness. A poor maid’s daughter struggles for a simple friendship and to gain respect from her peers and adults alike, but fails to accomplish this. A bright girl with the highest grades in her school wishes to receive the Scholarship jacket, a token of her hard work in school for eight years, but her social status and wealth conflict with reaching her wish. A woman who marries a poor husband desires the luxury and finery of being wealthy, but she fails to find this wealth and is obliged to find happiness with hard work and struggle. All these people were denied the same rights and opportunities that wealthier people have, making it harder for them to find happiness and reach their goals.…

    My Short Story Essay

Fridays and Saturdays were my least favourite days of the week. The Friday morning always started out well but then it got worse throughout the day. By lunchtime, I usually had enough homework to last me another week! That wasn’t the worst part though. At the end of the day, I had to walk to the train station, catch the 5:05 train to Castle Hill and get the bus to my employer’s house. I stayed there until the next night, enduring an earful of screaming and wailing, struggling to get the little ones in bed and get at least a few pages of study done. When my employer finally arrived, I was free to leave! But every time, I was left emotionally and physically scarred from my job. It felt like their lives were my lives and I had to be a part of it. That’s right. I was a babysitter, and I’d gotten so attached to my exhausting duties that I couldn’t leave them.…

The morning was young and the barn was alive. Horses were neighing, dogs were barking, the goat was bleating, and cats appeared out of every nook and cranny that you could see. During the fourteen years of living in Pennsylvania, my experiences have taught me many important life skills and morals that will forever guide my life.…

I walked in the doors and looked around at the blazing lights and large crowds. I walked up the large set of stairs in the dingy room where we were to get ready. I striped down to my shorts and walked onto the large scale to test my weight before the match. I weighed in at just 97 pounds. The matches went by weight, from smallest to largest, and were displayed on the clean wall by a projector mounted high in the gym ceiling. I was in the third set of matches, and could barely stand because of all the butterflies tightening my stomach. When the time came for me to start the match, I tightened my shoelaces and put on my head gear. My opponent and I walk to the score table, and look at each other. I don't know what he is thinking about but I know…

A short story concentrates on creating a single dynamic effect and is limited in character and situation. It is a language of maximum yet economical effect. Every word must do a job, sometimes several jobs. Short stories are filled with numerous language and sound devices. These language and sound devices create a stronger image of the scenario or the characters within the text, which contribute to the overall pre-designed effect. As it is shown in the metaphor 'lipstick bleeding gently' in Cinnamon Toast. This describes how the lipstick on a woman's faces is travelling from the lips into the skins around the mouth. The author has chosen this metaphor because it contributes to the reader gaining a stronger image of the characters that they may wear too much makeup and try too hard sociably. It also shows that they are older (i.e. l…
