Short Stories
In the two short stories, "The Free Radio" and "Everything Rises Must

Converge," the main characters of each story have to make many important

decisions/choices. The choices that are made change how other characters see the main

character as well as how they react to them.

In the short story, "The Free Radio," by Salman Rushdie, Ram has many choices

to make throughout the story. Ram who could have had anything in the world he wanted

made many poor choices. Ram was the cutest guy in the town; he had everything going

for him. Then he met the widow and her five children, and he also started hanging with

the youth armbands, these people lead to the downfall of Ram. The radio represented a

way for Ram to escape reality and when Ram didn't get it he had to deal with all the

negative choices he made. This is what hurt Ram because he had made so many negative

choices in throughout the story. The theme of this story is to be happy in whatever you do

and if your not you can always move to a new town and start over like Ram did.

In the short story, "Everything That Rises Must Converge," by Flanery O'Connor,

Julian learns there are more people in this world other than himself. The way he learns

this is by taking his over weight mother every Wednesday night to the Y so she could

exercise. Julian's mother is scared to go by herself because her town has become

segregated. In the story there is an expensive hat that is wore by Julian's mother. The

mother was skeptical to wear it because she thought it was funny looking, but she wore it

anyway. While on the bus to the Y a colored lady came on with a similar hat as Julian's

mothers. When Julian saw this he began to make fun of his mother because she had the

same hat as a colored person. The hat represents how race doesn't matter in the choice

making process. It doesn't matter what race you are, everybody has the same choices

throughout life.

I read the article titled “Choose Your Own Identity” by Bonnie Tsui. The author starts off by using a personal anecdote about her son and that he should consider what his race should be(White or Asian). She states ”It wasn’t until 2000 that the Census Bureau started letting people choose more than one race category to describe themselves, and it still only recognizes five standard racial categories: white, black/African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander.” This quote shows that there is no mixed option and you can't pick more than one, one must pick only one. To go back to her son, he can either pick Asian or white, this depends on what he wants to identify himself as.…

Finally, Julian and his mother’s collective pride results in their collective suffering. From the beginning, O’Connor characterizes Julian’s opinion towards his mother with disdain. He feels as though “everything that [gives] her pleasure [is] small and depresse[s] him.” He reveals his prideful nature through the pointed thought, believing that his worldly mindset has outgrown the small and closed-minded society that his mother represents. In addition, Julian describes his mother’s repetitive rant about the implications of integration as a “a train on an open track” of which he knows “every stop, every junction, every swamp… and the exact point at which her conclusion roil[s] majestically into the station.” The simile hints at his aforementioned distaste for his mother’s opinions,…

Julian knows that her world has change, but she has not change with it. He sees the world changing, but she does not see it. This frustrates him because he knows what social class that they both are in, yet his mother won't change. Julian's attempts to change her are in vale. He then only views her with the utmost disdain. "Julian thought he could have stood his lot better if she had been selfish, if she had been an old hag who drank and screamed at him. He walked along, saturated in depression, as if in the midst of his martyrdom he had lost his faith."…

Julian’s mother feels that she is superior to Negros which is why she refuses to ride the bus by herself once the buses are integrated. O’Connor states “she was one of the few members who arrived in a hat and gloves.” (569)By including what Julian’s mother is wearing, O’Connor gives insight on how she (Julian’s mother) places herself on a higher standard than everyone else. The hat and gloves that Julian’s mother is wearing are symbolic because by dressing this way to the reducing class she creates an aura of superiority this is proven when she tells Julian “most of them in it are not our kind of people.”(O’Connor570) The mother’s hat is also an example of situational irony because Julian’s mother wears her hat to the reducing class to claim a sense of dignity that she feels is rightfully bestowed on her by her grandfather but on the bus to the reducing class a colored woman is wearing the same hat. This is ironic because the hat that she wears to establish a sense of dignity is being worn by someone she deems as…

She notices peoples' skin color and makes immediate judgements of them. For instance, when she sees the little negro boy, she suggests that his family can't afford pants for him. Not only does she notice a person's race, but their style of dress as well. It is evident that she is concerned with clothing because of how she dresses for the trip. She dresses up so that if she should be killed in an accident, passersby would know she was a…

Julian also reflects the young generation when he tells his mother that times have changed, but his mother does not want to let go of the past. Julian's mother-"Your grandfather was a prosperous landowner…" Julian-"Will you look around you…and see where you are now?"...Julian's mother-"You remain what you are…Your great-grandfather had a plantation and two hundred slaves" (183). This quotes shows that Julian wants to get out of the neighborhood in which his ancestors had lived for generations and start a new way of life. This reflects the modern way of thinking because ideas of personal freedom.…

Irony, satire, parody, humor and epigrams are deeply connected by having one main thing in common: they are usually meant to hurt the intellectual self of someone. We use it in our everyday’s life to make fun of people, or simply because someone is annoying and we would like them to stop, without being “too” rude.…
