From ancient Greece, India, Pre-modern China to feudal Japan, there is a treasure trove of literature and epics from the ancient times available to us. Each is valued for having contributed to the way society thinks today. These literary masterpieces have shaped our ideas about human life and spiritual growth and have sparked riveting debates about the existence of God and the importance of spirituality. Among these great works of art is the Ramayana, a tale where Dharma, or right-conduct, pervades throughout. Though the Ramayana is set in an era far different from our own, several of the values, events and teachings are still relevant today. Many of the situations that take place in the epic relate to the issues we face in today’s society. In this paper, I will use various mediums to prove the Ramayana’s relevance in our modern world. I will begin by discussing the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta and its relation to my thesis. Then, I will discuss the values of the Ramayana in comparison to the other literary works of India, namely the Mahabharata. I will continue by analyzing the effect and impact of the Ramayana on Asia and Asian religions. I will then briefly discuss the doctrine of Jivatma and Paramatma in relation to the Ramayana and present day society. Following this, I will discuss the value systems present in the Ramayana as well as how they support or oppose the value systems seen in Western and Eastern society today. Next, I will discuss the role of the Bhagavad Gita in explaining and supporting the Ramayana’s value systems, as well as the impact the work has had on society today. Finally, I will close by talking about the notion of Dharma vs. Adharma, and the idea of globalization in comparison to Valmiki’s great epic.…

“When I meet a European, the first thing I say is, “I’d much rather watch football than football.” But I’m just teasing them, and they know I’d really rather watch football than football.” (Jarod Kintz). Football and soccer are two very different sports but at the same time they do have some similarities. Football is very much a contact and strength sport and soccer is more of a technique sport. But football does require technique as well, and soccer requires more contact than one might think. Differences include scoring, gameplay, field size, equipment, and game length.…

"Lost In Translation" is one of those movies that seek to be something having something extra something that is more than a regular movie. Moreover, it does so effectively without being pretentious, all through the movie it does not seem like it is trying too hard to be something other than what is there. It is skillfully written, well directed and it boasts of a solid cast not very spectacular but full of good actors. Jointly, this eventually results in an enjoyable and interesting movie. The important thing is that it has a message to it. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson play two individuals lost in the new and unfamiliar surroundings, restlessly moving around a Tokyo hotel in the middle of the night, who fall into talk about their marriages, their pleasure and the significance of it all. What occurs between them is very deep they open their hearts to one another letting the other know about the feelings and problems they are having with their marriages. In my view, these conversations can in fact only be held with strangers. We all need to talk about metaphysics, but those who are close to us want information and details; outsiders let us function more loosely on a cosmic scale.…

This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report. Chocolate comes from cocoa beans, and more than half of those beans come from two countries in West Africa. . But the situation is not all sweetness for poor cocoa farmers in Ivory Coast and neighboring Ghana. The United States has announced ten million dollars for renewed efforts to end the worst forms of child labor in the cocoa industry in those countries. The grant will support efforts to reduce poverty so parents do not have to depend on the labor of their children. Another aim is to give children more access to education. The money will go toward a new "Framework of Action" related to an international agreement from two thousand one. That agreement is called the Harkin-Engel Protocol. American Senator Tom Harkin and Representative Elliott Engel led negotiations with the chocolate and cocoa industries. The Department of Labor announced the grant in September, along with seven million dollars promised by the international cocoa industry. The governments of Ghana and Ivory Coast have also promised resources and policy support for the new efforts. Kevin Willcutts is an official in the Labor Department's Office of Child Labor. KEVIN WILLCUTTS: "We’re at a point in time when we think we have a real opportunity because with the signing of this joint declaration, the parties are coming together and saying that we share a common commitment to address the situation and to offer children better hope for the future through education." Daan de Vries is with Utz Certified, a program that tries to create a fair marketplace for agricultural products. Mr. de Vries says some crops are grown closer to cities because they must be processed quickly. But he says crops like cocoa and coffee are often grown in very rural areas with more poverty and less…

Translation must take into account constraints that include context, the rules of grammar of the two languages, their writing conventions, and their idioms. A common misconception is that there exists a simple word-for-word correspondence between any two languages, and that translation is a straightforward mechanical process. A word-for-word translation does not take into account context, grammar, conventions, and idioms.…
