STUDY OF FAILURE RATE & MAINTAINABILITY ASPECTS OF CNC MACHINES AND EVOLVING STRATEGIES FOR HIGHER AVAILABILITY AND AUGMENTATION OFMAINTENANCE

ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the study of the failure rate and maintainability aspects of CNC machines, its analysis and identification of contributing area and evolving Strategies for higher availability. A total review of maintenance activities identified and strategic requirements for enhancing the performance of machines are also discussed.

1. INTRIODUCTION

DRDL has a state of the art manufacturing facility, which employ the CNC based machine tools, the EDM’S the EBW’S and other SPM’S. These machines cater for fabrication of high precision hardware for various projects. These machines are of a varied types, makes and the systems varying from the hardwired control to the latest digital CNC system/servo drives and established over a span of 25 years.

With the emerging technologies, machine tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated and the maintenance technologies in need are being continuously updated. Through there could be a significant gap between availability and utilization for R&D work centers, meeting ‘on demand’ requirements is of prime importance..

The failure analysis, diagnosis of CNC machines is highly complex as it involves evaluation of inter-disciplinary areas ( the electrical /electronics, mechanical drives/motion control systems, hydraulic controls, pneumatic controls, vacuum system etc.) and various sub systems concerning each. The effective performance of this CNC equipment is dependent on the reasons /functioning of several discrete modules and integrated system.

Machine utilization and downtimes are of significance in meeting production schedules. An analysis of downtimes, maintainability, and reliability normally indicates the effects of degradation/deterioration of systems, age/utilization levels, and wear/tear obsolescence and spares management as areas of concern.
