Shitty First Draft Analysis
Two Summaries
“Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott discusses her opinions on first drafts, how she believes others dislike first drafts as much as her, how she gets past getting through her first draft, and her own experiences with first drafts when she worked as a food critic for the magazine California. She believes that others dislike first drafts of what others say, such as “We all often feel like we are pulling at teeth”. (Shitty First Drafts by Lamott) Everyone has to have a first draft, a shitty first draft, “that is how you end up with good second drafts”. She goes to tall that all great writers have to write a first draft that wasn’t worthy to read. Even for professional writers the first draft isn’t marvelous. She states that “the only way I can get anything writing is to write really, really shitty first drafts.” She debates that no one enjoys the first draft of writing. She would start, but soon scratch sentences and paragraphs out of the review and start over again. She would then take a break and then just write in great detail on what she and her colleagues had eaten, she states “I’d write a lead paragraph that was a whole page”. The “critics would be sitting on my shoulders, commenting like cartoon characters”. These critics she would ignore until the first draft were complete with details and longer that what she was wanting the article to be. She would use everything that had come up with, good and the bad ideas. After a day she would look at the draft again and start working on what she wanted to take out and concept that she wanted to go in more detail on that she hadn’t of in the first draft. There she would start her second draft, making notes and marking things
