Japanese Cultural Assignment - Shinjuku

Map of Shinjuku (ちず)

I chose to do Shinjuku as my assignment. I chose this place because Shinjuku is one of the most popular business, entertainment and shipping district in Tokyo. It is one of the most busiest places in Japan, and it is a number one suggested place to visit in Japan.

Shinjuku is a large city which lies in the western part of Tokyo, near Shibuya(渋谷) and Harajuku(原宿). It is a very busy district with flashing neon, giant skyscrapers, huge TV screens and all sorts of different shopping departments. More than 3.5 million people pass through Shinjuku station every day, making it into the top 5 busiest station in the world. Shinjuku station is another mall of itself, consisting of thousands of restaurants and stores underground. The prestigious Waseda University and Okubo, Tokyo 's beset known Korean town, are also located in Shinjuku.

It does not cost to get into Shinjuku, but it will cost to get there. The closest station from Homeikan Morikawa Bekkan Ryokan Tokyo, which is the accommodation on 03/10/12, is Tokyo Station. From Tokyo station to Shinjuku station, the subway fare is 190 yen for an adult.

Historical significance(れきし)

The busy, populated and active Shinjuku city we know today all started on March 15, 1947. It is the three wards of Yotsuya, Ushigome and Yodobashi merged together to become what is now known as Shinjuku. Yotsuya and Ushigome were two of the 15 cities of Tokyo, and Yodobashi were divided into four other towns. However, due to the increasing urbanization, the population of the four towns grew almost 62% in 1930, hence the four towns merged together to

As the name would suggest, Little Tokyo is fairly little, with its borders spanning a radius of only a few blocks. Walking from one end of the town to the other took no more than five minutes. That afternoon, we started our trip right in the middle of all the activity, into the mouth of a little alley known as the Japanese Village Plaza. People were walking in and out of cosmetic stores, bakeries, bars, gift shops, a brightly lit Sanrio store, cafes, a market, and a number of restaurants serving sushi, shabu shabu, ramen, even Korean barbeque. Many of these shops were playing traditional Japanese music, and interestingly, almost all of the employees that worked in these shops were women. The same could be said about the restaurants, as many of the servers were also women. The chefs on the other hand were all men, which may be one aspect of gender roles in the neighborhood. The Japanese had great pride in serving the food they prepared, something my sister and I noticed while eating at one of the more traditional ramen houses. There was a mixture of different kinds of people that afternoon: several Caucasians and Hispanics, a handful African-Americans, and of course plenty of Asians. There was also a sense of fusion about the Plaza between the East and West. For example, price tags were typically displayed…

    Empire of Japan and Shinto

Shinto is the principal religion of Japan, with roots that date back to prehistoric times with origins in Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism. The term Shinto refers to the “way of the gods” and was first given to Japan’s native religion a few decades after Buddhism arrived to the country. Shinto remains an essential, defining, part of Japanese life, culture and belief. The religion underwent a major revival in the second half of the 19th century and today the faith is still strong. Shinto is amazingly interesting, with a strong structural society, thus making this a very meaningful religion. To understand such a religion is important to read about its origins and history. In early Shinto days during the Yayoi period (ca.300BCE-ca.300CE), people established rice cultivations, sawing and harvesting rituals. By the time Buddhism arrived in Japan in the 6th century, Japanese people were worshiping Kami as a part of the country’s culture. The arrival created conflict in the country and both religions fought for power. Buddhists won, and they constructed many temples shadowing Kami. Despite victory of Buddhism as a religion, people were still worshiping Kami with, and soon to be known as Shinto. Both religions coexisted until the Tokugawa period, which lasted from 1603-1867 and under such time the shoguns promoted Daoism and Confucianism, which drastically reduced Shinto’s practices even more. During the Shinto’s revival in the 18th century, the Meiji emperor took power from the shoguns and made Shinto the official state religion. The Japanese Imperial family convinced the crowds that the emperor was the descendant from the sun goddess Amaterasu. Once devoted to local Kami, these know focused on the imperial cult, which was known as “State Shinto” and was used to promote nationalism. The Buddhist sites were destroyed and…
