Shiloh--in Hell before Night By: James Lee McDonough I decided to read this book to learn about more about the Civil war and the Battle of Shiloh. With all the controversy currently going on about the Confederate monuments, I needed to be more informed about the Civil war. The gunshots were so voluminous that they was thought to sound like a swarm of hornets. The Battle of Shiloh was fought on April 6th & 7th, 1862, in Tennessee, about 20 miles Northeast of Corinth, Mississippi. General Albert Sidney Johnston commanded the Confederate

Wars have been fought for many different reasons through the years, and that holds true for the American Civil War (1861-1865). In Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Killer Angels, the reasons for fighting the war are brought about through the officers and soldiers at a famous battle site of the Civil War, Gettysburg. Gettysburg was one of the most documented battles of the whole war. It took place over a span of three days and can be viewed as a turning point from Confederate prominence to Confederate demise. As in any conflict, there are two sides to the story. The Union and the Confederacy each had their own views as to why they were fighting the war. Victors write the history so too often only the Union side is presented. In the book we are presented with some of both veiwpoints.…

Man. The killer angel. [1] Since the dawn of civilization humanity has fought to protect what they hold dear. Whether that be freedom, religion or land, the body politic has been at war, even within their own borders. Civil War is defined as a war between regions of the same country.[2] Throughout the course of the four and a half year Civil War, many battles were fought, but none quite as pivotal as the Battle of Gettysburg. Had Lee obliged Longstreet in his persistence of a defensive strategy, the Confederate Army very well could have won the war. Instead, the Union succeeded in holding their ground atop a hillside and thus defeating the Confederate Army and ultimately winning the war. One contemplates the motivations of both the Confederates and the Union soldiers in the United States Civil War. Was it money? Power? Dominance? Michael Shaara, author of The Killer Angels suggests alternative motives. In his novel about the pivotal battle, he suggests that even though it was commonly perceived that soldiers were fighting solely…

It started on July 21, 1861 at Manassas, Virginia. The day Confederates decided to go North and get the Union. What the Confederates didn't know was the territory which helps benefit the Union. Soon many northern citizens rode out to see the battle had to quickly leave and head back to the capital Washington. The Union troops started to panic after they heard the Confederates were coming. They left later in the day and were 25 miles away from Washington D.C. . My son wrote “We arrived by railroads and there are more troops than we thought, this’ll be a close one.” I received news today that Stonewall Jackson received his name from this war. His real name is Thomas J. Jackson which none of us knew because all the town heard about was “Stonewall…

If Jefferson Davis was the ember, then it was Edward Pollard that provided the wind to start the firestorm in constructing this image of the South with his books The Lost Cause and The Lost Cause Regained. Pollard championed the idea of the South fighting for states’ rights, slavery was not cruel, and the South fought against great odds. Pollard, in his attempt to write history, stated “The Union was nothing more than convenience of the States, and had no mission apart from them.” Pollard saw the political division line between the North and South to be coincidental that this line separated slave holding states and non-slave holding states. Pollard paints the Confederate army as “ragged and poorly-equipped.” This was to contrast the Confederate…

A Stillness at Appomattox gives and inside view of what happened during the civil war. This novel covers the final years of the war through the surrender of Lee and his rebel army. It was not simply about the issue of slavery, but about the inability of people to compromise and look outside of their ingrained and traditional beliefs. A Stillness at Appomattox does not go into the reasons for the fighting, only that drawn-out descent into surrender by an out-manned rebel army, and the deterioration of the supplies and even the will to go on by so many individuals on both sides. While one of the final gripping scenes describes that meeting of a victorious Grant and a defeated Lee, this is a book about ordinary men caught up in extraordinary events.…

Though this film does not show everything that happened during the American Civil War, the portions of history it did portray were accurate. This movie could be used for a learning tool, but it should not be the only piece of information given to explain the entire era of the American Civil War. This movie only covers the Kansas- Missouri border and mainly only represents what the southerners went through. I did not know what the terms “Jayhawkers” and “Bushwhackers” pertained to, but I had heard the terms used prior to watching this movie. I found it to be a good movie and I would recommend this film to someone interested in a fictional story about the American Civil War along the Kansas- Missouri border.…

Episode V ,"The Universe of Battle", of The Civil War series directed by Ken Burns reflects on how the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 was a major turning point in the Civil War. He details how the Union defeat at Gettysburg, the work of women, and the entry of black men into the Union army enabled the North to significantly weaken the Confederacy. The Union and Confederacy both suffered thousands of casualties in the bloody battles that took place. However, by the end of 1863, the North was led to a "new birth of freedom" while the South had to come to the realization that the "bottom rail was on top", now.…
