The Battle Of Love, Or The Catch of A Life Time

Michelle Obama once said “you can't make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.” A similar choice was made by a young boy, in the short story The Bass, The River, And Sheila Mant by WD Wetherell. A tug-of-war occurring within the narrator between, the bass that represents who the narrator really is and what he enjoys doing, while Sheila Mant represents love and concealment of what he really is. As when the narrator wasn't trying to whew Sheila Mant, he would do his favorite way to pass time. “I never went anywhere that summer without a fishing rod” (Wertherell) 246. “ When I wasn't swimming laps to impress Sheila Mant, “ I was back in our driveway practicing casts (Wertherell) 246. The narrator fished during the summer, when he wasn't trying to impress Sheila Mant with his swimming.

The narrator had finally gotten a chance to convince Sheila to go on a date with him, to a concert in Dixford on his canoe. As he paddled the canoe to pick up Sheila, he cast-ted his rod, “ and I immediately forgot about it.” (Wetherell) 246. While paddling to the concert Sheila mentions, how she thought fishing was boring, and dumb. “ I would have given anything not to appear dumb in Sheila's unforgiving eyes.” As a result the narrator try’s to conceal is fishing equipment, that he had forgotten all about. “ She hadn't seen my equipment yet,” “ was I suppose push my canoe closer to the shore and carefully slide the rod in some branches.” (Wetherell) 247. Blinded with love the narrator did not want Sheila to find out about his little hubby. Because of the fear that she would look down upon him, and not like him.

While Sheila was peering over the canoe, the narrator slowly moved the rod behind his back ,and leaned it on the stern so it would be less conspicuous. But for his inconvenience he had caught something,”One it was a bass,” “ two that it was a big bass,” “and three the biggest

But, just as things were going swimmingly, our narrator realizes he didn't pull up his line he has under the boat. This normally wouldn't have been a problem, as he would usually have been able to reel it in, but everything changed after Sheila said that she didn't like fishing.…

He’s also ignoring Sheila and trying to get the fish instead of paying attention to her. But their is a possibility he could pick Sheila. Arguably, Priestley uses Sheila Birling as a vehicle to explore a diverse range of ideas, from the issue of gender roles and stereotypes through the idea of socialism and the need of shared responsibility with which Priestley himself occupied. Sheila can be seen as a representation of people changing their attitude and approaches through mistakes. Priestley seems to use her to encourage people to change and not to stepping back into the period before the world war happened where people only cares about themselves and ignores social responsibility. The ways in which Sheila accepts responsibility and urges the other characters int the play change their way and learn from their experiences with the inspector can be sen as a message behind from Priestley to the audience not to let the lessons learnt from the second world war be forgotten.…

    The Boat

In “The Boat” by Alistair Macleod, the boat, and the ill-fitting clothes he wore significantly represent the confinement and the father’s inability to break free from tradition, reinforcing that tradition can suppress one’s dream for greater things. To begin, the boat itself is a symbol of the fathers bounding to the sea, showing his obligation to follow customs. The boat is categorize with a “marine clutch and a high speed reverse gear and was painted on an oblong plate across her stern. Jenny Lynn had been my mother’s maiden name and the boat was called after her as another link in the chain of tradition”(Macleod 3) The high speed reverse gear depicts how the father is not moving forward along with the light green name of Jenny Lynn that demonstrates the father’s sacrifice for the fishing custom to support his family. The Jenny Lynn that he receives through tradition gives him a constant reminder that his way of life may never change and that his dreams are out of his reach. Furthermore, the clothing in his closet symbolizes the father’s imprisonment with tradition. The narrator mentions “his ill-fitted serge suit, the two or three white shirts that strangled him and the square black shoes that pinched” (Macleod 4) The square black shoes that pinched him means that the life of fishing that he inherits does not fit, the life he lives is simply to overpowering that it damages him. The white shirts that suffocates him shows the struggles he faces everyday that he is unable to separate from. His attire is so inflexible that it was leaving him trapped in one place incapable to grasp his own desires. Lastly, at the father’s death his departure speculates that it is suicide to liberate his son and himself from an unhappy future bringing the fishing tradition with him. When the father’s body is discovered “the white green stubble of his whiskers had continued to grow in death. Physically as he lay there with the brass chains on his wrist and seaweed in his hair”(Macleod…

“Take This Fish and Look at it*” by Samuel H. Scudder is the most compelling essay for this week’s reading assignment because the author wrote in an organized, laughable tone; therefore, allowing its audience to perceive the lesson as the professor intended it to be learned. Likewise, Scudder used three different apparent modes in his essay, these include: comparison / contrast, narrative, and description. I particularly liked this essay because it relates to the great significance that in every scenario, even writing, that things can be overlooked and need to be re-examined to find better, more sufficient details. Scudder also uses humor throughout his narrative, which compared to some essays, is quite enjoyable. Overall, every individual…

It was a lengthy, and a barren day on the fish farm. Young Jebediah had been out on the sparkling porcelain lake for what seemed like hours. You could tell by, the stench of perspiration and sweat that temporarily acted like his men’s body spray. He also looked exceedingly drained, and was beginning to receive an aching sunburn across his worn out body. His denim pant legs and his coral button down shirt sleeves were rolled up. You could tell that he had been sweating because his skin was glistening and it had a certain glow. Although he had been out there for hours he still was not able to catch any fish that his family could digest for a fulfilling dinner.…

Mary Quant was born on 11 February 1934 in Blackheath, London, United Kingdom. She was a London fashion designer in the 1950s and 60s. Her designs included miniskirts, vinyl boots, dresses with striking patterns and strong colors. Quant studied illustration at Goldsmiths College of Art, where she met her future husband and business partner, Alexander Plunket Greene. They had a son called Orlando and were happily married until Plunkett Greene died in 1990. Around last year of 1955, she teamed up with her husband, and a former solicitor, Archie Mcnair, to open a clothes shop on the Kings Road in London called Bazaar. Quant began designing unusual clothes that greatly appealed to the emerging youth market. The designs were simple, elegant and had clean lines; they were often made using fabrics such as gingham. Quant also sold accessories and jewelry made by students at the London art schools. The second Bazaar shop opened in Knightsbridge in 1957. During the 1960s, the mini-skirt controversially arrived on the fashion scene. Although the mini-skirt is often attributed to Quant, another designers, André Courrèges and John Bates, also developed it. Quant definitely made the mini-skirt shorter than other designers did, and it was instantly popular with young London women. In addition to the mini-skirt, Quant is often credited with inventing the colored and patterned tights that tended to accompany the mini. These mini-skirts became a pop culture phenomenon. Her clothes were not cheap, but were sought after and popular. By 1963, she was exporting to the United States and using clever merchandising. She moved into mass-production that year and launched the Ginger Group to distribute her cheaper designs, and soon afterward, J.C. Penney launched a line that she designed for them. Later that same year, Quant’s designs were sold at Paraphernalia, the New York City boutique started by Puritan. Shortly…

An exciting year started between the Chinese and Turkish governments by committing to, and celebrating, a new form of friendship--a friendship of promising collaboration. 2012 kicked off by dedicating to “The Year of Chinese Culture in Turkey 2012" This will be followed by “The year of Turkish Culture in China 2013.” These cultural ventures are motivated by the reestablishing of the Legendary Silk Road between Turkey and China. The two countries have committed to building prosperous diplomatic relations, economic collaboration and cultural exchanges. The recent bilateral Agreement entitled “Framework Agreement on Further Expanding and Deepening Bilateral Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of The People's Republic of China,” (2010, ratified on 12th January 2012, but not yet promulgated in the Official Gazette) between Turkey and China can be considered highly inclusive. It contains past agreements dating back to the 1970s, thereby demonstrating our expectations of witnessing a tremendous growth of business relations in the history of Turkey and China, together with prosperous diplomatic relations. On July 17, 2012, the Turkey (Istanbul) China (Guangzhou) Business Forum was held in Istanbul. Both countries showed great deference to the Forum by having high level officials participate in the opening ceremony. Apart from the diplomatic highlights, the Forum attracted businessmen from both countries, and provided a platform for networking, creating a brainchild of business opportunities. The Forum aimed to establish the China (Guangzhou) Turkey (Istanbul) trade partnership by naming Istanbul and Guangzhou as Sister Cities3. In addition, the Forum celebrated July 17, 2012 as the Istanbul-Guangzhou Economic & Business Day, which will be followed up by the next ‘business day,’ estimably on October, 2013, in Guangzhou.
