A duty of care is a legal obligation imposed on an individual requiring that they adhere to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeable harm others. In my work role I have the duty of care of service users and work colleagues to make sure that every think I do is done right and with no problems remembering that I am there to support others with choices they make. While supporting others with their choices I must also abide by the companies policies and procedures. I would also have Responsibility i.e. offering help & guidance Safety/Protection Promoting positive reinforcement Promoting hygiene Social/Emotional wellbeing.

Having a duty of care should guarantee the safeguarding and protection of service users in my care. We all have to be crb checked to check on our past history. We have codes of practice to follow within the company and all staff do have training. I.e. giving medication all meds are locked away and can only be given by certain staff. We have a safe for their personal belonging and any money they want us to look after. We carry out risk assessments on all things like helping them to cook and to go out on activities. Duty of care is looking after yourself, your work colleagues and service user while at work, it’s just like the way the look after your own family as you would not put them in arms way. ‘Duty of Care’ means providing care and support for individuals within the law and also within the policies, procedures and agreed ways of working of your employer. It is about avoiding abuse and injury to individuals, their friends and family and their property. Duty of care is to keep service user and young adults safe and to protect them from sexual, physical and emotional harm. Service users have a right to be safe and to be treated with respect and dignity, we as adults must take reasonable steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the service user.
