Shawshank Redemption Film Techniques Analysis
In the film The Shawshank Redemption, the director, Frank Darabont uses many techniques to create meaning and emphasis regarding Andy and Red’s journey from institutionalisation to freedom. He uses a range of camera techniques, sound, theme and symbolism to convey his points to the audience. The audience sees the use of camera techniques to show that Andy is redeemed when he escapes from prison, sound to show the harshness of reality, theme to show that religion is to be interpreted, and symbolism to show that Red has an important decision to make.
The director uses camera work most effectively in the scene where Andy emerges from the sewer pipe. This is to show that he is reborn and redeemed when he leaves Shawshank. After Andy crawls out

In one of the last few scenes of the film, Red makes his way through a field, walking alongside the wall where he is to find a letter with money enclosed for him. He sits against the wall and opens the letter which reads “maybe you’re willing to come a little further” and hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing”. By reading the letter, he is opening the door to potential freedom. He is giving himself the choice to cross the line from past to future. The letter is a symbol of hope, but ultimately it is up to Red to see it as a good thing as opposed to hope being a “dangerous thing” which can “drive a man insane”. The wall also is a symbol of Red being in limbo between physical confinements within the walls of Shawshank and mental barriers of being institutionalised, as opposed having complete freedom and release from the past. The audience sees a shot of this contrast, with Red in the middle, and the wall and field on either side. We remember what Red said about hope, and how his mind-set is changing. We find ourselves desperately hoping that he will make the decision to have hope. The fact that Andy never gives up on hope and manages to escape and eventually convince Red to come along is

One of the ways in which Andy saves himself is by making projects for himself. The first thing that Andy does is to make little sculptures using a tiny rock hammer, although this seems a very small thing as an attempt to save him, the impact it has on Andy is miraculous. Darabont has very cleverly shown us the way in which Andy suddenly changes from a man with an introverted character; that blends into the background, to a man who takes on an inspirational role towards others in Shawshank. The next project Andy undertakes is very much a more intense one, he recognises the potential of the library in the prison, and he puts it upon himself to write letters every week for six years to the Education Board, requesting funds for the library, the other convicts in the prison think that Andy is being obsessive and unrealistic. Although this is one of the key points in the film where Andy realises that there is possibility for him and that hope is a good thing. The library then reflects this and creates a positive environment that is a beacon of hope for the prison community.…

Quietly moving, yet startlingly beautiful; Shawshank Redemption is one of those movies that gets better every time that I see it. It was directed by Frank Darabond and based on Stephen King’s first non-horror novel. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins play two convicts serving time in a New England prison named Shawshank in the 1940’s. Tim Robbins plays a man named Andy Dufresne, a banker, who is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and is sentenced to two life sentences. Andy gradually develops a friendship with a fellow convict by the name of Red (Morgan Freeman) who has a knack for “getting things” for people for the right price. Formerly a banker, Andy gets on the better side of Shawshank’s bible thumping warden by doing his financial consulting and eventually helping him embezzle money from the prison. During his thirty year incarceration Andy slowly burrowed his way out of his cell, hiding the hole in the wall with a poster of Rita Hayworth. One stormy night he finally dug his way through the cell wall and escaped through five hundred yards of sewage pipe. Andy withdrew all of the money from the warden’s accounts and anonymously alerted the press of the corruption at Shawshank. Soon after his escape, Red was released on parole and the two were reunited on a beach in Mexico.…

Andy was willing to risk the wrath of the warden for the hope that one day he’d find a way to escape that as his salvation hope. The novel The Road used symbolism as the child who showed his humanity despite being born into the world as hostile as was. He often showed the good that can still be done and he symbolised the future for the world. This was further shown when the father died and he was adopted or joined the family as there were 2 other kids who were presumably in the same position as him. This symbolism was shown through the dialogue between him and his father and especially the description of their interactions “He sat there a long time weeping and then he got up and walked out through the woods to the road. When he came back, he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over…

An important technique the Director, Frank Darabont uses in this sequence of Andy’s arrival at Shawshank is that of lighting. Darabont uses this technique to show the viewer hopelessness when the men are standing in a line while being addressed by head officer Hudley. When Darabont used this technique of lighting the viewer can realize the loss of identity because the men’s faces are shadowed.…

The 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption, directed by Frank Darabont, uses recurring symbols to convey the main theme of different types of Freedom. Darabont uses the bible and hammer to convey the idea of freedom and salvation by creating relations to biblical events. He uses the hole to express the idea of a loss of freedom by showing the hopes of Andy being taken away when he is sent to the hole. The hope of freedom that is felt by the inmates is conveyed to the audience through the clever use of music and symbols of music throughout the film.…

The writing style feels authentic because Red’s vocabulary used to describe his experiences gave us insight to his awareness of the social relations between the problems, difficulties and hardships in the prison community and in Maine’s society, and awareness of the cultural relations that develop and produce open-minded and flexible mindsets towards thinking about life after prison. Red started off describing his function in the prison community as being reliable in fulfilling reasonable requests from other prison mates. When Andy began to communicate with Red to obtain a rock hammer and eventually several pin-up posters of actresses, this could be seen as the initiator of Red’s journey to finding his sociocultural identity because Red does learn from Andy that the items he would request symbolized his desire to return to society as a free spirited individual. As Red became attentive to Andy, he found that Andy went against the status quo because he would not conform to the culture of Shawshank State Prison and took control of his social life during his time in this environment. For instance, Andy demonstrated how he viewed himself in the world by applying the skills he acquired when he was in Maine’s society where it was a societal norm and value, to the prison community as a way to get a service in exchange based on his functional value. As an example, Andy used his knowledge of taxation to help one of the prison guards on how he could legally shelter money from taxation. Thus, his usefulness gained the trust of the prison guards and in exchange they had protected Andy from “The Sisters,” rather than accepting Shawshank State Prison culture by allowing “The Sisters” to have their way with him every time without a fight. After…

The film ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, immensely displays the beneficial effects Darabont was able to obtain through the complex use of Mise en Scene. Throughout the entire film, Darabont consistently enforced features of human equation which majorly influence the audience’s interpretation. The director accomplishes this by including key themes of human kind such as hope, the simplicity in the different ways/uses of camera angles and the intense representation of lighting and how it is used for a greater understanding of characters.…

The movie “Shawshank Redemption” is a movie about the struggle of a man named Andy Dufresne, who is a banker in Maine that gets convicted of killing his wife and her lover. He claimed he was innocent, but because of his cold and sheltered personality no one believed that he was truly an innocent person, so he was given two life sentences at the Shawshank Prison. A month later Andy approaches another character who they call Red, and Red is the guy you go to in the prison when you need something from the outside world. Andy wanted a hammer to work on his rock collections. Red assumed this hammer was going to be used by Andy to escape, but once he saw the hammer he thought there was no way it was possible. Andy started working with laundry, but then he attracted the attention of certain guys, so he was beat and raped daily. Eventually he got the job of working on the roof with a several other men. He over hears the one guard talking about his taxes, so he offers to help him since he was a banker in his former life. Eventually he expands the prison library by getting the warden to allow him to write letters to the state asking for money to complete the project. Eventually he gets enough money that he turn the tiny room into a full sized library. He worked side by side with the character Brooks, who was one of the oldest inmates. He begins teaching the other prisoners because many of them never received their high school diploma and many of them wanted too. The one new inmate named Tommy became really close with Andy and they would tell each other many stories. The one story Tommy tells is the story about the person who killed Andy’s wife and lover. The guards find out that Tommy knows who really did it, so they killed him and told the other prisoners that he tried to escape. The one morning when they are called to wake up and they step out of their cells Andy is missing. Red later receives a post card in the mail with nothing on it and this makes him realize that Andy…

A movie like Fences only comes once in a great while. It is sort of an unconventional movie, unlike most. It is filmed almost as though it is a play, which is exactly how this film got its origins. Written by August Wilson in 1985, Fences started off as a Broadway play that ended up winning the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 1987. This drama focuses on exploring the African-American experience and looks deep into the heart of race relations.…

Firstly Darabont uses the character of Andy to show that if we have hope, we can maintain dignity as well as giving this to others. As human beings, we all have an innate right to be valued and treated with respect. In the prison the inmates do not receive this, but many are content to just accept this, and in doing this they lose their humanity and individuality. When we are introduced to Shawshank, a soaring aerial shot dwarves the prisoners and shows how insignificant they are. The lighting is dull and lifeless, with all inmates wearing identical grey clothes, showing us that the prisoners have lost all individuality. On Andy's first night the new inmates are stripped of their clothes and marched to their cells, where they are taunted and heckled by the other inmates as 'fresh fish'. Darabont has done this to show how the new inmates have been stripped of their dignity, but also that all other prisoners are behaving like animals and have lost their humanity. However, Andy immediately stands out from the other prisoners. His shirt, although grey like the other inmates, is buttoned fully up, and he stands tall. In a voice-over, Red describes Andy as having, 'A walk and a talk that just wasn't normal around here; like he had on an invisible cloak that would shield…

Characterisation is a major technique used in this scene. This scene is the turning point for Andy’s life in prison. The scene begins with Andy alone in the laundry looking depressed. He has been in prison for 2 years and has been repeatedly beaten and raped by “the sisters”. While on the roof Andy keeps listening in on the guards’ conversation. He ends up talking about tax schemes with the chief guard. He breaks a deal that he’ll help the chief guard with his tax if each of his co-workers can have 3 beers each. The scene ends with Andy watching the other men drink with a strange smile on his face because he knows he’s done something better.…
