Shark Dna Case Study
Shark Species Identified

The common species found within the 16 samples were Carcharhinus obscuras as three shark-sampled sequences were identified with this species. However three other samples of shark DNA were found to be apart of the group of sharks banned for fishing purposes including two samples identifying as Carcharodon carcharias and one sample classifying as Sphyrna zygaena (figure 3), resulting in in only 81.25% of the sampled sharks caught had abided with conservation protection of sharks.

Nucleotide Divergence

Through the extraction of DNA from the shark sampled tissues, and analysis of the COI gene, the results show a 0.5% nucleotide divergent difference between the shark species identified. It is implied in figure three

In August 2001, a man walking his dog in Lindley Woods in West Yorkshire, England, found the body of 16-year old Leanne Tiernan, buried in a shallow grove. She was found about 10 miles from her home. Tiernan had been walking home from a Christmas shopping trip with her best friend in November 2000 when she disappeared. She had a black plastic bag over her head held in place with a dog collar, a scarf and cable tied around her neck, and cable ties holding her wrists together. Her body was then wrapped in green plastic bin liners tied with twine. The pathologist examining her body said that her body had not been there since November and that Leanne Tiernan had been strangled and her body was stored at low temperatures in the intervening time. Police tracked down suppliers of the dog collar and found that a man from Bramley had…

Adults were characterized by the fusion between maxillae and cranium bones. Another method of study was the used of external morphology. 18 external morphometrics were taken from 17 bottlenose dolphins from coastal Victoria. Beach-casted dolphins were previously measured in 2002-2009. Some animals were excluded due to incomplete data, such as bloating due to decomposition, or if the specimen was still a juvenile. A third method of study was mitochondrial DNA sampling. Skin samples of dead beach-casted dolphins were taken from coastal Victoria and placed in a mixture of substances to create a saline solution. When skin samples were unavailable, tooth samples were taken from museum specimens. Tooth samples were stored in sterilized Falcon tubes, and decontaminated by a solution of sodium hypochloride. Sections were…

It is estimated that between 20 and 100 million sharks die every year. That pales in comparison to the few 20 people killed every year by them. The three most predated species by include: Scalloped Hammerheads, Thresher Sharks, and Atlantic White Sharks. Because of the Movie Jaws, one species in particular has caught the attention of many. Atlantic White Shark populations have dropped by 79% in the past fifteen years, slowing down recently. (Shark Research Institute) We can attribute this to Atlantic White Sharks becoming a federally protected species in 1997, as well as protection efforts made by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (founded in 2012 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts). The Conservancy seeks to reach out and educate the public about this problem and hopefully inspire others to take action. Other groups have also formed in an attempt to protect marine life and biodiversity in general. Shark Advocates International, which focuses on giving the sharks a voice in politics. Achievements include getting several endangered shark species listed as a federally protected species, passing restrictions and bans on finning (where sharks are caught, their fins removed, and then released where they will soon die), fishing limits for smaller species of sharks, and development of fisheries to cultivate especially delicate breeds. (Shark Advocates International) Both the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and Shark Advocates International…

The sand shark is very important to my tribe, and I shall tell you why. Once, a very long time ago, a group of hunters were looking for animals for food and supplies. The eldest, and wisest, said “We must continue hunting! Do not lose hope!” Suddenly a squirrel scampered across a cedar branch. The youngest was quick, he raised his bow, arrow drawn, and shot. The squirrel was too quick, the arrow missed. Several days later, hunger spread throughout the village. The three hunters had failed to collect enough food for the winter. Many died, some went mad with starvation. One day in winter, the hunters had no choice but to hunt. After several hours, they noticed that one spot of water had not frozen. The hunters made the decision to go fishing.…

The first part of the article is all about the effort to stop whaling and how they have come up with a new way of tracing the import/export of whale meat. Then they start talking about how the governments and Japan and Norway have been actively resistant to efforts to inspect their markets and do the testing. Then it is said that some of the other countries think the band on Japan and Norway should be lifted so they can still enjoy whale meat. You read about how the anti- whaling effort has been nearly completely blocked by differences of opinion in the IWC and with the whalers.…

Although there are shark attacks that occur yearly, it is extremely rare for a shark attack to be fatal. Last year, there were only three reported instances of someone dying from a shark attack, which compared to the 100 million sharks that are killed each year by humans is an extremely low number. Sharks have no natural predators, however, due to the large amount of them killed each year, the population numbers are drastically declining. This decline could have a drastic impact on the food web as sharks feed on seals who in turn feed on fish. If the seal population increases, the fish population will decrease which would have a negative impact on the fishing industry. This has resulted in many countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, protecting the Great White Shark. It is very important that we change the false perception that we have on this magnificent creature and instead focus on learning more about this relatively unknown…
