Shane the Western Hero
Shane the Western Hero
A Western is a major defining genre from the American film industry on the border of civilization and the wilderness. Western is one of the oldest most flexible genre/hero types in the world. If you are looking for characteristics of a western hero Shane is the character to go to.. Shane is bound by legal codes of behavior, ethics, justice, honor and chivalry (or the code by which knights were supposed to live by). He is a passive, mysterious man who says little about himself. No one even knows Shane’s last name. He dresses and moves differently with so much confidence it is noticeable. He is a loyal to the end kind of guy who never betrays anyone. This guy is the most dangerous, safest guy you could ever be around. Not only can he easily take up for himself in any type of fight, but if he gets an emotional type of tie to a person he will always be there for them. Shane doesn’t like to fight and doesn’t even carry a gun. He minds his own business and didn’t fight unless he had no choice. He believes that strength and power doesn’t come from the weapon, but from the person holding it. People feel safe around Shane; he is the personification of stability. Shane is a man of action. It shows how hard he works and his integrity glows. He never complains about anything, even after he gets shot he says nothing. Shane in the novel shows not only shows what it takes to be a hero, but what it takes to be a man. Schafer creates such a perfect hero that there is no visible flaw. What a classic hero is to me would be something like a cowboy. With the media that’s what anyone would think. When thinking of a classic hero what comes to mind is the good guy in the shootouts, on the horse, in the middle of the desert. What comes to mind is a mysterious guy with a cowboy hat walking into a bar drinking until he passes out and then waking up to go help the town. A classic hero is seen as more of someone who helps the town more than someone who helps

An epic hero is a brave and noble character, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. The source from which this comes from is “The Odyssey” by Homer. This story is about a man named Odysseus who fought to save his life. Suffering from bitter days and nights. Trying to get his shipmates home. Although Odysseus couldn’t save them, for their own recklessness destroyed each and every one of them. Acting as children and fools, they feasted on the cattle of the Sun God Helios. From all of these adventures, the daughter of Zeus, Muse, tells us in our time to lift the great song again. Killing his own men on the land of Scylla and Charybdis’, and lying.…

Hero- a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. In modern day society an epic hero is a larger than life person that has outstanding abilities and has some kind of antagonistic foe that that he/she has to battle with. Sadly the character Odysseus from Homer's Odyssey would not fit the example of a modern day epic hero because he’s conceded, non forgiving and he cares about himself over the lives of his crewmates.…

    Outlaw Heroes

In "The Thematic Paradigm", Robert Ray explains how there are two distinctly different heroes, the outlaw hero and the official hero. The official hero embraces common values and traditional beliefs, while the outlaw has a clear sense of right and wrong but operates above the law (Ray). Ray explains how the role of an outlaw hero has many traits. "The attractiveness of the outlaw hero's childishness and propensity to whims, tantrums, and emotional decisions derived from America's cult of childhood", states Ray. (309) Ray also says, "To the outlaw hero's inconsistence on private standards of right and wrong, the official hero offered the admonition, you cannot take the law into your own hands." (312) The values of these two traditional heroes contrasts clearly. Society favors the outlaw hero because we identify with that character more. We see ourselves more so in the outlaw hero than in the official hero. The outlaw hero has the "childlike" qualities that most of us wish we had as adults. To civilians it may seem that the outlaw hero lives more of a fantasy life that we all wish to have.…

A hero, in the traditional sense of the word, is generally a protagonist in a story whose overwhelming power is the only which can defeat the evil of the day. In a classic example of this comes Beowulf, a novel adaptation of the epic Anglo-Saxon poem by Robert Nye. The main character and namesake of the story is Beowulf, an adventurous young hero. When he hears the tales of the monster Grendel that terrorizes the Danish kingdom, he immediately has the urge to lend his assistance to the situation, knowing that he is the only one who can defeat the evil. Not only is Beowulf a hero, he is an epic hero.…

Society today is arguably the most judgemental it has ever been. One can not simply walk down the street without doing something that causes others to judge. Judgment is primarily considered to be a bad thing and those who are judged the least are most often most liked by the members of society. There are few people today who are not judged at all, typically they are powerful, attractive, smart and think of others thoughts and feelings before there own. These traits are similar traits that of which a hero would obtain, but in society today what truly is a hero? Is a hero a person who dresses up in a costume, and saves people? Is a hero the person who does the right thing even when no one is looking? Or is a hero the person who is not judged by anyone because there actions are pure? All these possibilities might define a hero but truly a universal hero does not exist. In today's society, there are so many different ideas of what a hero might be it all boils down to the standards individuals have set for their vision of a hero.…
