At the beginning of section four, Eddie travels to the Grey Zone with Jane. Once there, Jane introduces Eddie to Clifton, her brother who has been sleeping with Violet. Jane and Eddie haven’t been in the Grey Zone for long when the Yellow prefects, Sally Gamboge, Bunty McMustard, Penelope and Courtland show up unexpectedly. The yellows claim to have business in the Grey Zone, helping Eddie carry out his chair census as he will be leaving for High Saffron the following day and no one can be certain that he will return to ever finish it. While searching one of the houses, Jane signals Eddie to go up to the attic so he immediately volunteers to search the top floor before one of the prefects have a chance to go up there first. While walking back to the Ford, Eddie stops Jane and asks her to marry him and she agrees. Jane drives Eddie, Violet, and Tommo back to East Carmine in the Ford, racing to get back before all visible light is lost. Though she can drive in the dark, she doesn’t want to reveal that to Violet and Tommo. Eddie perches on the front of the car and uses the flares that Yewberry gave him for light the rest of the way home.
On the way back to East Carmine, Violet apologizes for what had happened earlier that morning and Eddie says that he will forgive her if she gives her 700 merits to Jane to which she agrees. Eddie informed Violet that he was going to marry Jane and Violet gets upset. Once back in East Carmine, the youths are scheduled to take their Ishiharas. Eddie meets Jane’s parents. His Ishihara score says he is over 87% red while Jane’s test results indicate that she is 12% yellow and 14% blue, making her a green. Since complimentary colors are forbidden to marry, Eddie is doomed to union with
