As you learned in the third case, Tanglewood is working to improve the quality of their selection systems. The process of assessing selection methods initiated by Marilyn Anchley was not limited to store associates—it also covered department managers, assistant store managers, and store managers. Although the method of using an increasing number of tests and forms was generally seen as an adequate update to the process for hiring entry level employees, store managers agree that this is not a sufficiently rigorous method for selecting department managers.…

SG Cowen’s biggest strength in their overall hiring process is how invested they are in the whole process. The amount of time, effort and money SG Cowen puts into finding the best candidates is a strength they play upon to retain their clients and to make sure they stay focused in their market. Another benefit I see in their hiring process is the fact that they are fairly specific in what they are looking for, it allows them to hone in on a particular group and narrow the field. Their specificity also narrows down the selection pool but makes the recruitment process far more customized, which is what they want for their organization.…

My personal evaluation of the process used by SG Cowen is that it is a very demanding process which consists of a structured and stringent plan for making hiring decisions. A very strong point of the process is Ray’s approach in that by focusing to the next 15 top schools you can find more loyal and competitive students. Additionally, by doing the informational interviews, the team captains can distinguish the students who really want to be prepared for the official interviews. Another positive point is that the candidates do not depend on one-vote decisions. Furthermore, the company’s CEO is present and provides support by giving speeches to attract new employees. On the other hand, there are some weak points in the process. Decision makers want to finish the procedure as quickly as possible, as the event is organized in their free time. This may lead to the wrong choice of candidates. Additionally, there is a potential bias in the selection process, due to personal preferences of the bankers and due to time constraints. Lastly, when some candidates have the…

THE RECRUITMENT DILEMMA AT S.G. COWEN S.G. Cowen is an investment bank that is active on Wall Street and that focuses its recruitment activities on the last 15 schools of the top 25 US business schools. After having established a coherent strategy, Rae (head of recruitment) sent S.G. Cowen bankers to recruitment events on universities’ campuses to recruit for Super Saturday. Thirty students that had passed the on-campus rounds were invited to the major recruitment event ‘Super Saturday’ at S.G. Cowen, New York. The thirty candidates had 5 half-hour sessions with bankers and were rated on the criteria of ‘entrepreneurship’ and ‘fit’. The aim of this event was to find 15 candidates suitable to the job and during the hiring meeting 13 spots had been allocated, leaving 2 spots for 4 candidates in the ‘maybe’ category. The question remained to whom to allocate the remaining 2 spots.…
