"The Army is a values based organization. We inculcate our soldiers with the need to treat all with dignity and respect. We enforce standards, and when our soldiers fail to meet these standards, we take appropriate action."(insert citation here) George B. Wright, an Army spokesman spoke these words following the death of a soldier, Danny Chen, who was hazed by his fellow soldiers. The story of Danny unfortunately is not an uncommon one. Danny is one of many teenagers who experiences a form of hazing. Hazing is defined as, "to harass by banter, ridicule or criticism" (Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition--CORRECT CITE) Hazing occurs not only in the military but through many different venues. The act of hazing often has life altering results like in the story of Danny.…

This took place at Taft Union High School near Bakersfield, California. This school shooting started because the student was a victim of bullying and he wanted revenge. The student came to school and shot one student and missed another. He called the student who was bullying him, and the came out of hiding and apologized, but the teacher, Ryan Heber, interrupted and he came face to face with the 16- year-old student, who was armed. Heber wasn’t sure with this if the student was either, going to put the weapon down or continue shooting. While the student was distracted, Supervisor Kim Fields took the rest of the students so they could escape. Finally, the shooter surrendered and the police took the student into custody. Friday, the next day, school was cancelled due to the situation, but counseling sessions were held that morning for teachers or students who wished to attend. Before Heber spoke to the shooter, the student who was shot in the process was in a critical, yet a stable condition. Kern County Sheriff, Donny Youngblood said “The name of the student wasn’t released, and is debating whether he will be charged as an adult or not.” KDET reported “Heber is a well-known and liked science teacher and was a graduate at Taft and with the situation the Heber family will be there for him with emotional support.” The Taft shooting was the latest school shooting in the U.S., and it launched a big debate whether teachers should carry weapons to protect themselves and others in case of another shooting. Immediately after the shooting, parents went to the school to pick up their children and express concern about the school security. A parent reported “We’re going to protect our students a lot more, and it goes to show that there is one bad apple out there.”…

As the 2013 football season has come to an end and we have named a Super Bowl winner, new information has arose about the Jonathan Martin racial discrimination suit. Martin, former Miami Dolphins player, reportedly stated in the Well’s report he was repeatedly bullied by his teammates. In actually Martin was not bullied based on my own interpretation. In fact, Martin was going through the process of bullying/hazing that most people go through on a regular basis. Through this paper I will discuss similarities in Martins argument dealing with regular day life.…

When it comes to sexual assault, it is the common belief that the offenders are male and the victims are female, but this is not always the case. In 2014, a study was done looking at the effects of victims, offender and juror gender could impact decisions in child sexual assault cases (Quas, Bottoms, Haegerich & Nysse-Carris). This case study was done by having mock jurors read scenarios of a man or a woman defendant accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy or girl. There were four different versions of the scenario where the 15-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by a 36-year-old teacher, who was also the soccer coach; the only difference in these scenarios was changing of the genders. The mock jurors would then state their verdicts and rated both the defendant…

As for Team C we have discovered that the missions of our two different categories are basically the same. The mission is to help the victim and make others aware that there is help in preventive services when it comes to these issues at hand. The similarities in the mission of the domestic violent category as well as the sexual assault category is almost identical. The mission for sexual assault is to deliver confidential care, support, and advocacy for victims of sexual assault, while concurrently endorsing awareness and prevention programs. Sexual violence is a serious problem that can have lasting, harmful effects on victims and their family, friends, and societies. As for the domestic violent mission it states to provide comprehensive support and advocacy services to victim/survivors, focusing on immediate and long-term safety, empowerment, dignity, and hope. We as a team think that it is pretty clear that the main objective here is to advocate, prevent, and make aware the services offered to victims in these traumatic experiences. The differences between the two issues is the funding for these programs determine if the doors stay open or if the services will continue to be offered to the victims at hand. Domestic violence is sometimes if not all the time not taken seriously because the victims either make up with their abuser or do not press charges as a result of fear of retaliation for the suspect. As for sexual assault programs We believe that funding will always be giving to these programs because of the severity of the issue. We are not saying that domestic violence is not severe but domestic violence has a tendency to titer the fence and hold up court proceedings with uncertainty of what the victim wants to do. However in the domestic violence topic it is not up to the victim to press charges on the suspect…

Daniel Luzer, the writer who wrote the article “Is Alcohol Really to Blame for the Prevalence of Sexual Assault on College Campuses?” this article was published by Pacific Standard. Luzer argues that alcohol is not to blame for the rise of sexual assault but instead the real root of the problem lies with the unrestricted female and male interaction. He believes that if there were fewer opportunities for “cross-gender mingling” that there would be less sexual violence. On college campuses, sexual assault has become a recent development. The reason for this is not to blame on the alcohol consumption, the reason is how men and women socialize freely in their college world. During an internship Luzer tells of working for an older man. He and this…

Right from the beginning line, Thomas Rogers, sucks me into this story. It takes guts to start something off like that and pull it off, but he did. I found it very amusing, hilarious, and dangerous. College hazings are no joke if they are anywhere near the level he describes this one as. When he states, “ College is a strange time…we’re free to make an extraordinary amount of mistakes and end up in situations that may not teach us much…” I began to think about next year when i start my college life and what exactly is in store for me. I hope its not a struggle balancing everything and trying to pass my classes. When the author begins to describe his childhood I feel like I can relate to him. My brother got most of my parents athletic abilities so I have to make due with the amount that I have. We both are tall, also clumsy even though we don't want to be. You don't get to pick how tall you are, what traits you have, or if your athletic or not. You have to make due with what you have and find something that suits you. Thats one thing that i believe the author was trying to get across. He showcases that by doing something out of the ordinary and joining the rowing team. Also another thing that I believe he tried to get across is to strive for what you want. He went through two weeks of tryouts to join his universities varsity crew rowing team. Then he finally made it and had to then go through hazings.I believe that if you have to become a jock in order to boost your self esteem that you have issues you need to sort out. No one should have to do that to feel good about themselves. Finally, he tried to get across that you don't have to be normal its okay if you're not. Embrace and find excitement in whatever it is. Be your own person.…

Sexual assault is a hot issue, the definition of what constitutes assault and its repercussion effect the whole of society. The United States Department of Justice defines sexual assault as, “Any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient” (DOJ). CPT Bryan believes that the military tries more cases for sexual assault, cases that civilian lawyers would never touch. He has never had a commander wavier on prosecution, his philosophy is if there is probable cause and you believe ethically that a case could be tired and won then we should see where justice takes us. In contrast, in the civilian sector where you have cases that there is intimate partner violence or a sex assault accusation in an…

Hazing is a concept that has been seeing increasing prevalence in America, especially within the past few decades. Indeed, hazing can be done for any number of reasons, yet the increasing prominence of technology such as social media means that the message that is sent through hazing is more salient now than ever. Although these traditions are a way to help promulgate the violence and reduce it, it is nevertheless as inhumane as causing direct harm, yet despite this, current laws do little to stem the tide of hazing incidents, nor to protect those who are vulnerable to them. This is especially disgusting when one considers the psychological, mental, and, in many cases, physical harm that can ultimately arise as a result of hazing. For this…

School shootings in general are tragic, because they often affect innocent victims and almost always could have been prevented. In the given scenario Harless actions are in fact unstoppable, but the actions of the faculty are quite the opposite. The school went about the situation completely wrong. Instead of confronting the students once notified they are possibly in possession of a firearm, they should have notified law enforcement, worked to secure the area then isolate Harless and McCoy. In this situation, the boys are both criminals and victims but the issues they experienced at home or in the past do not and will never justify their actions. Per the list of symptoms given on the U.S Department of Veterans affairs website I do not believe they are suffering from PTSD, but I would also point out not enough back ground was given to support or deny the claim. I find that 10 years served is not equivalent to a person’s life in addition to the countless others affected by Harless’s actions. If kids are getting 10 years for smoking pot the scales that the blind lady of justice is using are off balanced. This whole scenario is wrong in my book…

Date Rape Rape is defined as when one person wants and pursues a sexual act on, to or inside another person who does not want to participate, and who does not fully and freely consent to take part in that act. People usually associate rape as forced sex by a stranger. This is sometimes true, but not in all cases. When someone is raped by someone they already know this is called date rape. Date rape, or acquaintance rape, is very common. Acquaintance, date, and spousal rape is dramatically more prevalent than stranger rape. About 84% of all rape victims knew their attackers prior to the event and that among victims 18 to 29 years old, two-thirds had a prior relationship with the rapist. Alcohol and drugs are often involved in rape. There are certain types of drugs commonly used in rapes called date rape drugs. They are used because drugs like these can be easily mixed in drinks to make a person black out and forget things. These drugs include GHB,…

The recent Globe and Mail investigation regarding sexual assault cases has caught the attention of many individuals. The article “Why police dismiss 1 in 5 sexual assault claims as baseless,” states that the study involved over 870 police forces in Canada. The article states that 19.39 per cent of the sexual assault complaints that were received over a four-year period of time, were dismissed by police forces as being unfounded (Doolittle, 2017). The article also states that according to research from North America, the United Kingdom and Australia, between 2 per cent and 8 per cent of complaints were considered false reports (Doolittle, 2017). Nonetheless, I agree that for serious complaints like sexual assault, the police should have no…
