Seventh Grade By Gary Soto Summary
The short story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto expresses several themes throughout it. A theme is the main idea, overall message, or lesson that the author wants you to take away from the story. Themes can be about friendship, love, or anything else that readers can learn a lesson from. There are many themes throughout the story. Some of those themes are never give up, don’t pretend to be someone you are not, and believe in yourself.
The first theme of the story is never give up. The first place that shows this is on page two, Victor is about to leave homeroom with his class. Then, he sees Teresa talking to the teacher and taking her time, so he waits for her. This shows that he is not going to leave Teresa just because she is not hurrying. Another thing to show this is on page 4, Victor looks around the lunchroom to try and find Teresa. Throughout the story, Victor believes in himself in a variety of ways. He shows it by scowling after Michael showed him to impress girls, and he shows it when trying to talk to Teresa. At the end of the story, Victor believes in himself when Teresa asked him to tutor her in French, even after pretending. Victor says yes after believing in himself that he can tutor her, and that she still likes him as a friend. Victor shows that he has not given up and his self-esteem has not been lowered because of this mess-up.
