Author Note: Prepared for “History of Christianity” HIS-211-A-ON25; Professor Lilia Anand Abstract In the past 20 years the percentage of Americans that say that they believe in God has dropped by 8%. (CNSNews.com) - A new Harris Poll finds that a strong majority (74 percent) of U.S. adults say they believe in God, but that 's down from the 82 percent who expressed such a belief in earlier years. Christianity for future generations is on a decline. Since taking the Bible and prayer out of Schools, there have been five negative developments in the nation’s public schools: Academic achievement has plummeted, including SAT scores, increased rate of out-of-wedlock births, an increase in illegal drug use, increase in juvenile crime and deterioration of school behavior. Without someone teaching our youth in schools about God, the Bible and Jesus, where are the youth of America going to learn? I am employed by The Salvation Army and live day to day witnessing men and women, in which have been homeless and have “hurts, habits and hang-ups” ; some turning their will and lives over to the care of God and others, not! There are many children and teens that I witness to that don’t even have the foggiest idea who Jesus is and what He did for them. In the upcoming pages, I will discuss all the above along with how I perceive my life in the future, what I was and what I have become by following Christ, His Miracles still at work, and how the global world plays into it all.

I. Decline in Christianity Is Christianity in decline in America? When you examine the cold, hard numbers it is simply not possible to come to any other conclusion. Over the past few decades, the percentage of Christians in America has been steadily declining. This has especially been true among young people. As you will see later, there has been a mass

Over seventy-six percent of the adolescents in America believe in a personal God (Regnerus). Despite this fact, the stigma surrounding the debate of separating school from religion mostly brings religious talk in education to a stand-still. Religion has presented itself in society for as long as history has recorded life in societies, and many individuals still practice their faith. In today’s society, however, teachers and educators rarely mention religion outside of Social Studies classes in public school systems. Yet, science has proven that allowing religion in lives affects and improves the quality of life. Public schools should allow religion because the presence increases test scores, results in better behavior, and leads to an overall happier life.…

Each of the generations mentioned above has different views and attitudes on religious matters; with the younger generations being said to be less religious than the elder ones. Several researches have been carried out to try and obtain facts on the role of religion among the various generations present in America. Recent research has shown that America is slowly becoming less and less religious as years go by. Research by the Pew forum has shown that fewer young subscribe to any particular faith (Poll, 2010).…

Majority of Americans believe that regions influence in the nation is waning. America has always been a religious country. Americans pray even more than they go to church. This shows that religion in American society is still important because it fills people lives with happiness, it helps marriages last longer, and it provide moral guidelines.…

Going to church and practicing your religious beliefs every Sunday was as common as sitting down with your family every night for dinner. Today’s generation is lucky to have dinner once a week together and may not attend church at all. Americans are so busy with their lives that without being taught religion as our parents and grandparents were, many may doubt what they hear their grandparents speaking and…

The decline of membership and influence of Mainline Protestant denominations continued in the 1970s. Conservatives charged that these groups had lost their fire, and consequently their membership, to more committed groups. Perhaps more people left the Mainline organizations for new modes of worship or because organized religion had lost its importance to them.…

On one hand, I think that Christianity is lingering, but fading. Most English people will tell you they follow the Church of England, but they might do this out of custom and not out of any deeply held belief. The vast majority only attend church for christenings, weddings and funerals. They don't know and they don't care about gods or religion. It's also both preserved and weakened by being the established religion. Preserved because its presence, language and rituals have become deeply traditional. Weakened because all that it is for most, if it is anything, is that ritual, social and ceremonial presence. It terms of more active commitment:…

A survey done by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life detail statistics on religion in America. Among the 35,000 adults surveyed, ages 18 or older, 78.4% considered their selves to be Christian. Christian, meaning either Protestant, Catholic, Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness, Orthodox, or other Christians. 4.7% are considered other religions, such as Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, other world religions, and other faiths. Those to be considered Atheist, Agnostic, or nothing in particular were about 16.1%. Only an insignificant 0.8% didn’t know or refused a religion. Many key findings were found based on these surveys. More than ¼ of American adults (28%) left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion- or no religion. The survey does confirm that the United States is becoming a minority Protestant country (51%). But another reason why the survey might be wrong is because the United States has the theory of separation of church and state that is enforced in the country.…

Grace Davie is a proponent of this point of view. For her, religion has simply become more privatised, that is: it is now a private matter of personal preference. This is more appropriate for a society which emphasises individualism and simply echoes what is happening in other institutions in society: the family, for example, is no longer a simple traditional nuclear family, other groupings are now widely accepted. People are then free to decide whether they wish to attend church, worship on their own or even use modern technologies to help them worship, whereas in the past the norm was to attend church and people felt obliged to do so.…

The Center for the Study of Global Christianity in Massachusetts, has conducted research published in June 2013 about how religion has being changing through the years 1970-2010 in every part of the world and how religiosity is expected to be 10 years after. It is stated in their research “In 1970, nearly 82% of the world’s population was religious. By 2010 this had grown to around 88%, with a projected increase to almost 90% by 2020.” (Center for the Study). Within the research, they mentioned that religion will increase over the years and that the number of non-religious people, which was 19.2% of the total population in 1970, is dropping. However, the Christian percentage is decreasing in many countries. For example, “Canada where Christians fell from 94.5% of the population in 1970 to 69.4% in 2010, with a projected drop to 66.0% by 2020. The United States also saw a large decline in its Christian percentage, from 90.9% of the population in 1970 to 80.1% in 2010 (78.1% by 2020)” (Center for the Study). This decline is also happening with many countries in Europe where Christianity is expected to decrease from 78.6% to 78% of the population. (Center for the Study)…

On the other hand, religion plays a similarly important foundation in the lives of the vast majority of people worldwide. According to a recent study, over 92% of Americans (including, amusingly enough, 21% of self-described atheists and 55% of self-described agnostics) affirm some belief in God. What's more, 39% of Americans (including 37% of atheists and 48% of agnostics -- more than the population at large) say that they experience a "deep sense of wonder about the universe" on at least a weekly basis [Pew2008]. One scientific colleague of the present author, which colleague personally hasn't…

No matter how many people are interviewed for a poll, there are always going to be numbers that don’t seem to add up. Especially with a touchy subject such as religion and the presence of God. Most people would think that people in the United States are extremely religious, with many of the high authoritative figures always using religion as part of their campaign. But surprisingly religion isn’t as high as one would think. Only 86% of people in the…
