Service Learning Essay
I thought the quote above is very important when thinking about service learning and how we can make a change in our community. We should not spend too much time dwelling on the existing reality and instead should focus more time on what we can do about it. It is so easy to complain about what is already going on instead of trying to come up with a plan that could change our existing reality. When thinking about my service learning site People Serving People it is one of the first things that come to mind. The name in itself portrays their overall mission which is to “help homeless and at-risk children and their families manage crisis situations and build a strong foundation for their long-term success.” Rather than dwelling on why these families are homeless and what they did to get them in that situation it is more about creating a change and

As students, it naturally becomes easy to just completely absorb ourselves in classes, work, and other school activities that we are involved in forgetting that there is much more to our college experience than that. Problems are happening right around us even more specifically on our campus and as community members who see there is need for a change, it is up to us to build a new model. In A good Time for the Truth editor, Sun Yung Shin states, “A society that systematically suppresses the stories and wisdom of certain groups cannot make the best decisions for a shared future. We need a future in this state that leaves no one out. We are interconnected, we are interdependent” (Shin 7). The first step in working towards this is realizing that everyone is a human being that should be treated like one regardless or their background. There is no way we can move towards future goals of unity by acting upon how we feel or act towards a certain group of
