Service Learning Essay: What Have I Learned?
Service Learning is an opportunity that only few fortunate students are able to participate in. I am very thankful that I have taken advantage of this opportunity. This whole experience has opened my eyes in many ways. It seems that every day in Mrs. Pickett's 1st grade class is a whole new day.

On the first day at my job site at Lexington Elementary School I was somewhat nervous, but after I met Mrs. Pickett the nervousness completely disappeared. I learned that things aren't always as bad as people make them out to be, one should always learn for themselves. I was also nervous about the children, whether or not they were going to like me, and what I was suppose to say to them. After the students greeted me with hugs I knew this was going to be a really fun experience. I never thought I would enjoy teaching or working with children, but after interacting with them I have made a 180 on my way of thinking. I also have learned that teaching is not a breeze by any means. It is extremely stressful and has a lot more to it than just grading tests and keeping the kids straight. The teacher has to plan ahead and deal with parents by making sure they are keeping track with what each and every student is doing in class. Every student is different, they seem to be on all different reading levels, I never realized that because I just assumed they should all be the same. This is a great experience that I am continuously learning and interacting with every day.

This service learning experience has been really interesting. I am very thankful that I have opened my eyes to really take this opportunity as a guide to helping choose my career. I am not sure if I will take the teaching route, but I sure do understand and appreciate what teachers do. I learned a lot more than I truly expected I would, I am really glad I chose to go to the elementary school.

I was a nervous wreck before my Teach Live experience. I did not know what to expect, and I was hoping that I would nail my teaching. Needless to say after my experience, I was so relieved, and I loved Teach Live. I loved it so much that I asked if I could do it again. I have learned that I will not be a perfect educator, but I hope to do my best. Some things I did not know what to say to the students, but I figured it out. I also learned that I am going to love teaching mathematics. The students in the classroom were great. I also learned to look at the students, instead of the wall. I also learned to stay calm and involve all the students. I am sure once I get into the field at high schools I will learn even more about myself.…

My co-op placement as a first grade teacher at Moraine Hills Public School had the greatest impact on me. Growing up, I have always wanted a career where I can help others in a positive light. However, being more reserved and shy made the decision of becoming a teacher more difficult. By volunteering at summer camps, festivals and extra-curriculars, my communication and social skills improved, but the placement was the focal point of my high school career. It helped me break out of my shell and gave me an insight of the teaching experience. The greatest learning outcome for me is to be flexible, open and creative. I learned that teaching is not just about the structure given, but how one can make the structure interesting and engaging for the…

Service learning is an education method that is used to provide the student with the ability to discover themselves, become productive and helpful citizens, and to gain academic knowledge while doing so. I think service learning is included in this course because it helps us to become more connected with our surroundings. Great teachers are active in there community and know the struggles that the community faces and wants to help. When a teacher understands her community she can better understand her students. Also, I think it is included to teach us that we can always find time to do what is important. Quite often we trick…

As part of a teenage education program, I was able to work beside people from many different backgrounds and talk to people from everywhere. The visitors ranged from YMCA school groups to Amish families. I was happy and honored to talk to all the people that were interested. The experience allowed me to grow and learn more as I taught others. There were many responsibilities with my position. Everyday, a few people were entrusted with different animals. Sometimes the animals would be in a cage, but if you were lucky, you would be holding an animal, anything from a gecko to a cockroach. My favorite was the snakes. Seeing as I was and still am thirsty for knowledge, the experience was one of the…

The very first day that I went to Taft to cadet teach I was very nervous. I was nervous to leave the high school, to get in my car and drive to Taft. I was terrified to park and walk in. I thought to myself “Where am I going to park?”,”Do we go to the front office first?”,”What if they do not like us?” I had all of these questions running through my head. So we parked at Taft and we walking in with the rest of the group. It was weird waiting for the doors to unlock, but as I was waiting I noticed the new doors they put in that were more safe and secure. Once the doors were unlocked we walked in through the commons, up the stairs to the front office. They already had our sign-in book waiting for us when we walked in.…

For the service learning component, I did activities like ivy pulling (April 11 1-4 pm, April 30 10-2 pm), going door to door in my dorm with information about energy conservation (April 21 7-9 pm), and attending the March for Science (April 22 10-1 pm). These activities give me about 12 hours of volunteer service. I brought what we were learning in class to other aspects of my life, as well. For instance, I talk to my friends, in person and online, about the environment and the impact they have on it as often as possible. In fact, I talk about it so often that one of my friends stopped taking napkins at dinner just so I would stop commenting on how many they wasted. This might not be the best way to get someone to behave sustainably, but it…

The skills we developed during many projects, such as, the Bill project, Letter to Constituents, Election Project, and etc; Are going to be useful for not only history classes but for English, Math, and Science. This is because history classes encounter our opinions and perspectives that we have on the real world issues. Applying the connections towards the outside world with what we’re learning in all classes is very significant and may increase our comprehension of the particular topic. In a way, our class discusses each other's opinions and what we believe is right in either small groups or as partners. I believe that working in a social group environment may bring out confidence and strong opinions that are held within us, especially in American…

I was completely surprised that my English class was a service learning course that first day. A surprise that has been good in every way. I love that my learning experience in English has been so much more than sitting in a classroom. Yes, I'm learning about how to improve my own writing and critical thinking skills but I've also had a new appreciation for talking about food. I have even more of an appreciation for the vegetables I'm eating, I've learned about using putting plants together as natural pesticides. I've had the joy of planting new life and clearing away the old.…

My service learning experience was much different from any other I've ever had. It wasn't at all like an ordinary reading or writing assignment. It was an ongoing project that dealt with real life. I did my service learning at a women’s shelter in Chicago Illinois, called Inner Voice Homeless Shelter. Service Learning is an opportunity that only few fortunate students are able to participate in. I am very thankful that I have taken advantage of this opportunity.
