Servant Leadership
Servant Leadership -

Servant Leadership is often interpreted differently by anyone who has been interested in it. However, there are certain traits that are consistent in the definition and most people do agree that the main goal is to empower others. I believe one of my strongest characteristics would be listening and empathy. In my opinion, these two go hand in hand and should actually be considered one characteristic. I have always been a person that others could feel comfortable confiding in. I feel that the reason for this is that not only do I listen, I listen with empathy. In order to be a successful listener, I feel one must be able to show empathy to those they are speaking with. While my son was growing up, our house was the one that all of the kids would hang out at. As a result I was able to get to know all of them extremely well and they grew to realize that I could be trusted and really did care about all of them. I became the person they would confide in when they were unable to speak truthfully with their parents or anyone else. This became a common occurrence and I feel that I had a positive effect on their lives. While studying for my Master’s Degree, I did my thesis on “Drug and Alcohol Use Among High School Athletes”. Most of these kids were involved in sports and had been most of their lives. One part of my research was to survey high school students from various sports programs, ages, and schools. It was important to be able to obtain honest responses and I believe that my ability to build trust with them was a major reason for the success of my research. I did make sure that all of the surveys were confidential, however they were all more than willing to participate and from the answers I received, I believe they were extremely honest. Another trait that I believe is a strong one of mine is building community. I have always been one that tries to involve everyone and make them feel comfortable, feel like they belong.

The most interesting part of the book that I reflect on is chapter 3 on the model, because it uses the paradigm shift (upside down pyramid symbolizes the servant leadership model according to, Hunter) concerning change in environment, such as doing things in a different way to change your life and meet goals. Fundamentally, servant leadership entails leaders being servants first. It starts off with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, and goes beyond one’s self interest, where leaders are genuinely concerned about serving their followers. Further, it also involves leaders not using their power to get things done but instead try to persuade and convince their followers. In this way, followers support their leaders and are motivated to become the very best they can become (Dierendonck, 2011). Indeed, servant leaders do care about the development of their employees and even share power.…

Throughout high school I have been blessed with the opportunity to experience positions of leadership. As taking roles as both a follower and a leader in democratic groups such as football, student council, and especially marching band I have learned the significance and dedication of servant-leadership. I am honored to have been given the position to be drum major during my junior and senior so I could strive to enrich the extraordinary experiences music has to offer to fellow peers. Through an attitude of servant-leadership, perseverance and passion I have been privileged. Hence, I dedicated and invested myself in a program that has blessed me with several breath-taking experiences that opened my eyes to a new perspective on the world and on what my destiny holds.…

The first and most important characteristic of an excellent servant leader is listening. A servant leader always listens to the concerns of his/her co-workers, staff members, or patients and tries to find the most appropriate or the best solution to a problem. Leaders have traditionally been valued for their communication and decision-making skills. Although these are also important skills for servant leaders, they need to be reinforced by a deep commitment to listen intently to others. By listening intently, servant leaders seek to identify the will of their group…

One situation in which I had to apply it was a time I was experiencing conflicts with my roommate. We were very empathic to each other’s needs and wants during the conversation since we have not had much experience with confrontation. Another situation in which I applied a servant-leadership characteristic is healing. Due to the fact that everyone on campus has upcoming final exams, most people are running around panicking or worrying about their future GPAs. I depended mostly on my healing ability to understand their worries and support them through this rough journey. Along with these examples, I view many other Luckyday people express some characteristics as well. The greatest one I examine is the support and compassion we have for each other. Since we will parting ways next fall semester, I believe this was an excellent experience for us to connect and remain connected for a long…
