Scope
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is the standard generic term for satellite navigation systems that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. For the African continent, GNSS system will increase access to remote areas and provide positive impacts in other service sectors. The potential areas consist of both social and professional applications. The applications are mainly in the sectors of aviation, multi-modaltransportation, land management (for surveying, cadastre, and others), maritime, rail transportation, in the oil and mining industries and the social sector will allow the development of social location based services (LBS) applications. Some potential GNSS applications markets have been identified by the AiA team based on various discussions with the African stakeholders. For the conference, six most suitable applications are identified for discussion, which are relevant for the Africa Sub-Saharan countries. The identified GNSS applications have been selected in this conference to stimulate the required interests in the commercial industry and among the industry stakeholders where the immediate Return on Investment of GNSS applications investments to offer services to the citizens can be measured and justified.

Objectives
The main objectives of this International Conference are to foster and promote African technological and scientific competences that have a clear potential for Galileo and EGNOS products and services applications. More particularly, the conference aims to: • foster the development of innovative ideas and new products related to the space sector; • promote the collaboration between African industrial and university students to obtain a more stable and better structured African satellite landscape; • better position the local industry with regard to future African and worldwide activities so as to be ready to submit competitive bids when the respective calls are published; • increase the

A more complex application of triangulation occurs in a global positioning system (GPS). A GPS consists of one or more earth – based receivers that accept and analyze signals sent by satellites to determine a receiver’s geographic location. GPS receivers, found in handheld navigation device and many vehicles, use triangulation to determine their location relative to at least three geostationary satellites. According to Sanders, the satellites are the points in the triangulation formula…

Many people may not realize when and where Global Positioning System (GPS) technology came to fruition. The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System was first introduced by the US Air Force in the mid1960s, eventually becoming a Department of Defense (DOD) project. The system was designed to determine positional information on Earth through the use of a constellation of orbiting satellites. The first GPS satellite was placed in orbit In 1978. Once complete, the system was to have 24 satellites, providing unlimited two and three-dimensional coverage 24 hours a day. When the U.S. Army deployed for Operation Desert Shield in 1990, 16 NAVSTAR satellites were in orbit, providing a guaranteed three-dimensional coverage lasting about 19 hours. The new devices had a built-in error of only sixty feet compared to earlier land based systems with up to eight miles in expected error.…

Geolocation has truly made an impact on the world. In the past, individuals used to print out their directions and used paper to tell them where to go. The only problem with this is that you could potentially lose the paper or if you wanted to do add a route onto it, there was no possible way because you wouldn’t have access to the Internet. Now with the onslaught of Smartphones, tablets, etc. you can plug in your information and your current location is already saved on the server. You are able to find your current location on your mobile device by the GPS chip that is installed on them. The GPS chip is where all of the data is stored, sent, and received. Smartphones, tablet, and Internet devices all should have GPS chips within their systems. The iPhone and “The iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G models do have built-in GPS chips that receive signals from the global GPS satellite system to determine your location - as closely as three meters, depending the number of satellite signals the chip is receiving. GPS in the iPad 2 is classed as assisted GPS, also known as AGPS, which enhances the performance of standard GPS in devices connected to Wi-Fi or the cellular network. The iPad 2 W-Fi + 3G may be used for the full range of apps that require detailed location information wherever you may be…

GPS is a navigational aid that is satellite based. It is made up of a network of 24 satellites in orbit around the world. The first satellite was launched in 1978 and the last was put into orbit in 1994. Every 10 years another satellite is put into orbit because each satellite is made to last that amount of time. The system began as a military application but in the 1980's the government decided to make it available to everyone, anywhere, anytime. The system finds your…

Logically speaking, logistics would not work efficiently if not with the assistance of up to date technology known as GPS, which of course is an abbreviation for the “Global Positioning System.” What this system has given to logistics is essential for logistics to work properly, and that is providing accurate and detailed directions for the various forms of transportation to utilize. In other words; if a shipment is traveling by car, a GPS can be utilized to access the best possible routes, so as to minimize interfering with traffic and reaching the desired destination in a much quicker time. Furthermore, the GPS system has provided ocean freight forwarders the convenience of being better able to navigate on the water, by storing various access points and saving the best routes to take. This is obviously a very important element on the water, as sometimes this system can prevent disasters from occurring. Also, the GPS system has given transportation and logistics companies the ability to calculate the best possible routes, while utilizing other computer software, like Google maps, which of course utilized the GPS system. Clearly, the benefits of this system to transportation/logistics companies are endless and have made these jobs much easier.…
