Separate Is Never Equal Summary
The books that we discussed this week were two historical fiction books, Separate is Never Equal and Sylvia & Aki, and one history book, the Journey: Japanese Americans, Racism & Renewal. I love how the three books give me more than just the pleasure of reading. I also love the fact they have given me better understanding and more knowledge of the lives and the struggles of Mexican Americans and Japanese Americans in the past , in the ways that historical fiction books and a factual historical book do.

Featured with my struggle in identifying the borders between the fictionalized and the factual parts of the stories of the two books, I was lucky enough to have Dr. Enciso close with our group to clarify / share a historical background

One of us suggested that to her, a historical fiction should involve historical account that has been researched and that is close to non (historical) fiction. The characters may be fictions or some of the events, maybe fictionalized but the major event should be well researched and factual. Ethically, however, we seemed to agree that authors should uphold some ethical issues when fictionalizing some events surrounding the major factual event. We looked into the fact and the fiction elements of “Holocaust narrative “ as an example. One of us said that many people have rejected the narrative that have been told by so many survivors for some various reasons. In relations to the “fiction around factual event” issue, I brought up a case of an Indonesian historical fiction book that sparked criticisms for, according to some people, bringing false factual reports on certain conditions. I agree to one of us who said that a good historical fiction should have a well researched factual event before fictionalizing some elements of

The book I chose this week is called "Tjatjakaymatchan (Coyote) A legend from Carmel Valley" by Alex O. Ramirez and is a Native American tale about why the coyote calls into the night. I would categorize this book as fiction because of the talking coyote and fox. I decided to read this book because of my Choctaw heritage and it reminded me that many first people languages and stories are vanishing into the time because they not written down most of the time. The most interesting piece of information that I found was about why this book was published and it was because the writer's friends encouraged him to write down his memories of his Elders so that they would not fade into time. I also thought his illustrations were interesting because unlike…

Fragments, a short Holocaust memoir, was published in Germany in 1995. Binjamin Wilkomirski, the author who is also a Swiss musician, claimed that he was a Holocaust survivor. He described the book as a memoir of his early childhood experience in concentration camps. The book became very popular and was soon translated into nine languages. After three years, it was published, and the public began to question the authenticity of the book. They found that Binjamin Wikomirski was a liar, and that he developed his fiction story on purpose. Stefan Maechler, a Swiss historian, proved that the book was fiction by examining specific details in his book that shows why it was considered fiction. Since that time, critics began to argue that Fragments has literary value. However, I would argue that the authenticity of the book matters, therefore, Wilkomirski’s lying undercuts the value of the book and it prevents the readers from knowing the real history of the Holocaust.…

Mainly the thought of toileting issues was there a set area for going to the bathroom? In the 1940s the United States was getting ready to get involved in World War II and needed to set an example of good ethics on a global stage to help bring. The book The Boys of Pointe Du Hoc written by, Douglas Brinkley has many examples of ethical decision making that was critical at the time in order for the United States to bring peace to World War II. For instance the author is re-establishing already known information but with a new style of how he obtained the information, which was straight from the sources of D-day survivors. With the decision to tell the story of D-day through the quotes of survivors it helps show how the army generals and rangers would act showing their ethnicity toward the United States and helping resolve World…

Such an example can be seen in Zinn’s quoting of Morrison, who told the story of columbus whole, but buried the less favorable facts of genocide with a myriad of information ultimately devaluing the genocide of a population to a mere occurrence that should weigh little on one’s final judgement of Columbus. In most history books Columbus is portrayed as a heroic figure who brought forth the discovery of the new world leading to many great things most prominently the discovery of our very own great nation, calling for celebration and the tale of his great adventure. Zinn’s criticism with Morrison’s portrayal of Columbus in his book Christopher Columbus, Mariner is that though Morrison…

One of the significant and strong styles used in both, Scholastic Scope articles “Teens Against Hitler” by Lauren Tarshis and “Betrayed by America” written by Kristen Lewis is the real life accounts that are described, which make it even more heartbreaking to read. One of the real life accounts in “ Teens Against Hitler” that is really eye opening is on page 8 when the narrator states, “ His entire family was dead.” You can read something and know right from wrong or bad from good, but when you read non- fiction and realize that this is a real live person with a real life story that is the most has the strongest impact . You can only imagine going through what someone has been through but even thinking about it can give a heartache. Tarshis also uses a real life account on page of her article which makes the article have a whole new aspect, “ He hated bathing in the one room shower, with its eight showerheads and no privacy.” Picturing what people went through during the Holocaust is almost impossible and something that hopefully will never happen again. All the heartaches people had and all the cruelty is awful. So many people in our world today take advantage of all the things we have and don’t realize how hard it was for people during the tragic time. Both the pieces have real life…

Gloria Bird’s writing and Sherman Alexie’s writings were my top favorites out of this folder. Turtle lake was a funny, entertaining read. I couldn’t help myself from picturing the stereotypical group of men; with all of them making fun of one another and causing ruckus. The Stick Indians is such a childish fear and I think that is what makes it so terrifying. Knowing that they should not scare you, yet they do; using your imagination against you. The…

Fictional literature of the Holocaust the reader opens a diverse number of stories about this tragic and gruesome historical event. Fictional stories explore a sensitive topic with respect, it gives honor to the survivors of the Holocaust by informing new generations of the adversities the Jewish people experienced. Fictional Nazi genocide stories solve the limitations present in autobiographies and survival testimonies about the Holocaust; Anna Richardson mentions one of these limitations in The Ethical Limitations of Holocaust Literary Representation, "survivor testimony can never express the full Holocaust experience, as by definition those who survived did not go to the gas chamber"(7). In reality, the authentic stories about the holocaust…

As people decide to pass down stories it is important that we are truthful in the stories because this is now a part of history. History is passed down through storytelling and it is important to know what our history looks like so that we can shape our future. In lots of history the issues are sometimes hard to grasp and to understand but there is importance in what has led us to this point. The Holocaust is definitely one of those segments in history that needs to be remembered in the way that it actually was. In cinema we have the opportunity to see the things that our ancestors have gone through many centuries ago. The message must be conveyed in a truthful manner so that we can respect it in a way that we are able to understand. As we continue to learn about history it may make us upset because we don’t understand the rationale behind the actions. Adolf Hitler believed that the Jews were inferior and for that they were murdered. Although this is a tragedy and it is very hurtful to hear and read about it did in fact…
