Sentence and Thesis -uniforms
Thesis Statements
A. What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement is not the same as a topic. A thesis expresses your opinion about your topic. It is a statement, narrowed down to one sentence, of the purpose, intent, or main idea of an essay. This statement, clearly and concisely, presents the writer’s point of view. Your thesis is the basis of the opening (first) paragraph of your essay and should be written as a single complete sentence. In this class we will write our thesis statement as the last sentence of our introductory paragraph.

B. Why do I have to write a thesis statement?

Without a thesis statement our audience, and we as writers, do not know which direction to take in our essays. Think about it as maybe driving to Florida without specific directions. Most people will know that they are headed south, but those people might not know the exact roads to take. This person with no specific directions to Florida will get lost and confused. Without a thesis statement your essay will be unfocused and confusing.

What is a thesis statement? A thesis is an interpretive statement, not merely a factual one. It offers an explanation for events, not merely a description or summary of what happened. Consider the difference between the declarations that "the North won the Civil War" and "the North used its greater population and industrial might to defeat the Confederacy." Or, alternately, consider the difference between the following statements: “The South lost the Civil War” and “Ultimately, the South failed to muster the manpower, resources, and popular will necessary to win the war against the Union.” You are encouraged to review the guide to writing a history essay and sample essays posted on our Blackboard class site.…

One of the reasons that school uniforms should not be allowed in schools because they are not cost effective. One reason why they are not cost effective is because some families cannot afford multiple uniforms, plus the clothes that students wear outside of school (Pakhare 1). Unlike the students who can afford three, four, or five uniforms, the poorer students’ one uniform will look worn out and used by mid-semester compared to everyone else (Stainburn 1). It will be easier to pick out the kids who cannot afford much. The social boundaries that uniforms were trying to get rid of will still occur with or without them (Cruz 47). The second reason behind why school…

There is really no wrong way to write a thesis statement, you either have a good or a weak thesis. I am going to explain four weak thesis statements I was given, then tell you what was weak about them and how to make it better. A weak thesis fails to take a stand and not be specific towards the topic. Just making an observation or an overly broad claim will not work. A good thesis is ideas that answers a question, it usually starts with an observation that is something you want to figure out rather than something that you think you already understand. It should also indicate the point and justify the topic.…
