Self Reflection on my Class Participation
I have been studying Comparative Ethnic Studies here at Washington State University going on 3 years, I have been in numerous classes, read chapter after chapter of texts, and have been an active student in those classes from day two. I say day two because I know that I am the type of student who, in a classroom setting, will not speak up unless 1) I am 1000% positive that what I have to say will add and give something to the lecture or 2) I have an idea of the instructors view of me as a student. Yes, I know that shouldn't matter, but to me it does. I have always been the type of person who needs that positive reinforcement, somewhat of encouragement or a belief in my abilities to feel confident in those abilities.
I am a bright person who has a lot to contribute to the class, but this semester, I lacked that confidence. Whenever I would read the assigned readings I would take notes in my books, jot down questions, and make sure that I fully understood the material before going to class. I was always prepared for lectures but I rarely raised my hand. I would just sit back and listen to what everyone was saying. Just because a student is actively participating, I would sit in my seat and actively listen, take notes, and in those 50 minutes I would walk out of class with some of my questions answered, new ideas and lenses to look through the same material with. I have always been a listener, it is one of my strengths as a student, but in a class such as this where participation is vital, I understand where that could be a strength and a weakness. I know my strengths but my weaknesses as a student tend to top that.
I cared a lot at the beginning of the year about how the instructor felt about my abilities as a student; I felt that he thought I wasn’t smart and that bothered me. Not that I need people to think that I’m some overt genius, but still…I need that reassurance. I know now after meeting with instructor a few times and addressing this that I shouldn’t

Since starting this college course I have seen many similarities with how to interact with students and employees. I have also gained confidence speaking in front of the class. At the start of the college course this scared the life out of me. Now I realise the more I do it the less frightening it will be.…

Where you sit in class might have a bearing in how well you do. Instead of slipping into class at the last minutes and sitting in the back row, arrive on time and sit in the front of the room. You'll be able to ask questions and participate easier without having to yell.…

One common stereotype we have in the classrooms is directed toward the student that sits in the back. Educators assume that the student who sits in the front is there to learn with no distractions, yet the student that sits in the back will be a C student that flies under the radar. Sharing this assumption with students or stating the common, “If you sit in the back, you’ll be the C student,” is only going to make the student distance themselves from that class and that teacher. Usually, once a student sees that someone expects them to fail or do less than they had intended, it causes them to adopt the same idea. Communicating things to students that have trouble in class such as, “It will be less distracting to sit in the front,” or calling on students in all areas of the class and switching student’s seats after each term would be a more effective way to make sure your students are successful in the classroom, instead of writing them off at the beginning. Encouraging participation without first causing the student to feel uncomfortable or doubted would be a better route to amplify the student’s interest to learn and…

The best participation grades will go to those who consistently demonstrate an excellent command of the material; who volunteer to participate frequently; who respond to my questions accurately; who comment thoughtfully, and who make insightful connections between the course materials and our world, including issues and ideas raised in other courses. Simply attending class without active, intelligent participation, as defined above, will yield a C- for participation. If you plan to miss class, you must let me know the reason before class by email. Failure to do so will lower your participation grade. So will more than four absences. More than seven absences will lead to a failing grade for the…

I didn’t really enjoy my first semester. I felt pressured and stressed. I felt like I had a lot of work to do. I hate having a lot of homework, because then I don’t have any time left for myself. We also get graded for our participation. I need to raise my hand more in this class to get participation points. This assignment made my grade go down a lot. Every year it gets harder and there’s a lot more work to do every time. Just thinking about it, gets me feeling…

One class has really stood out to me and my grade proves it. This professor is helping to show me many different ways I can succeed here at Austin Peay State University. Thus far she has shown me several different ways to help improve my studying skills. The option of joining a study group is the best option I have made. I have joined a study group for my art class. In the beginning I was not doing so well, and then I caught drift of a study group that was being formed and I signed up. A few strengths that I have brought to my study group is that I record each of the lectures so that we can listen to certain parts. When we have the ability to re-listen to the lecture it helps us get a better understanding of what was being taught. I got this grade saving idea from my APSU 1000 instructor, Mrs. Bonnie Hodge, who suggested that we ask our instructors if we are allowed to record their lectures. My next highest grade is a two-way tie between my Art and Psychology class, both ranking in at a B. I have the opportunity to record both of their lectures, and I do so every day. Having the ability to listen to lectures at home has a huge improvement on my grades, because it allows me to listen for important information that I may have accidently missed during class. I feel that I can do better in all of these classes if I spend about another hour per week studying for each class. It is very important to me that I make the best grades possible, because I would like to be accepted into the Nursing Program. This program is very competitive because they only accept about 50 students per year. In order to be accepted into this program I must bring up my English grade to at least a B, which is satisfying to me. English is a subject that I have always struggled with throughout high school. I try to study to the best of my ability and I do well on the test, it’s just writing papers that get me. The only thing I can do is study on how to make my papers flow…

I felt it took me a lot longer than everyone else to get used to the system, and because the class was quite noisy, at times i was unable to hear what Heather was saying. I did ask another student to explain certain things to me, but I felt I was distracting them from their own studies. By the end of the session I felt no clearer about doing a literature search on my own. Even though I had narrowed my search down to 12 hits, this had happened with help from another student, and I didn’t feel confident enough to know how to go about it on my own. I felt confused and overwhelmed, but I was too embarrassed to stay behind and ask for more help. Fortunately we had all been given a hand-out as well, to enable us to keep practising in our own time. When I got home I looked through the booklet, and found after reading it several times it began to sink in, I got straight back on the computer and accessed the search engine immediately.…

I am able to help my peers by suggesting ways to improve on themselves by studying with me before a test or working together on homework problems. In addition to scholarship and leadership, I am very active in service activities outside of school. At my mother’s house, we volunteer for a dog organization and foster pit-bulls who are injured and in need of nurturing. I also go with the Williamstown Jazz Band to perform at elderly homes in order to cheer up the residents. Furthermore, I will gladly partake in school sponsored activities without delay. Because of my participation in extracurricular activities, my character has grown immensely over the past year. I have adapted to easily take critique and apply…

I have had the opportunity to apply theory to practice at my placement; having this privilege has enhanced my knowledge that I bring to the classroom settings and used it is in an appropriate manner. I believe that I deserve a B+ letter grade because I have demonstrated a high level of knowledge and integrity as learning professional. My peers and professors have a positive impact on my learning from the very first day I came to Seneca College to pursue education as a Social Service Worker. However, I am looking forward to learning more from them because life is a teacher and the more we live the more we learn. During class and group discussions, I actively participate, and avoid being judgmental. I demonstrated good active listening and commented when it is necessary to do so without interrupting or talking over people. I value and recognize people’s input and opinion during class and group discussion. The factor that is impacting the dynamic of my group is each member’s personal trait (McKinlay & Ross, 2008, p. 35). This event is happening because there is conflict that has not been resolved among some members in the group. As a group, we will address this issue by calling people out and bringing their awareness to the values and norms that was put it place when the group was formed. Professionalism is important for Social Service Workers to develop because it is useful in all areas of work in…

One of the problems here is their program Turnitin, this problem, however, turned around as I gradually learned to dig deeper and investigate further for my own answers. In the beginning of the semester there was an adjustment period, but as the semester progressed and as I began to work with the system, I learned to be less dependent on the instructors and be more dependent on myself. I think this was a good learning experience. Sometimes teachers answer far too many questions easily when they need to let the student search for their own answer. As a distance-learning student, I found that it was important to work independently to find solutions to problems. This is where my critical thinking skills came in handy. I don't mean to disregard the need for the learning community, but being an independent learner enables a student to be a better member of that learning community. So, to summarize, my greatest weakness the inability to access information instantly became my greatest strength my ability to become an independent learner and achiever.…

During this class I have made two self- discoveries that will positively impact my career goals. Those self- discoveries has helped to mold, and shape me into a student that I have never thought I would be. Those discoveries were that I am an organized learner, because I made a study plan to help me determine when, and how I would study. Being that I have five children, I had to make sure that I had set a schedule so that my course work including study time would not affect my family time and take away from spending time with my children and fiance`. Since these are the competing priorities in my life right now learning to obtain trust and consistency in the home while I have been attending school has also improved because not only do I see my success so does my children and fiancé. Knowing that I had that support also has made it possible to do my best in school, setting the pace for them to do the same in school also, whether it be good grades, sports, etc. I know that they will continue to be good at what they do and have proven to do so time after time.…

First and foremost,I need to attend all the classes although it was held until the late of the evening because I know that I cannot study by myself.I need someone to guide me which are my lecturers or my friends. If I studied alone,I will spend my time by sleeping and playing with my phone. When I did that,I cannot be a great student like I want.Meanwhile, lecturers give a lot of information during their lectures.Usually, they do not repeat what they have tell us today in the next class. So,if I did not attend the class, I will be left out from any academic activities.Last year,I had a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. But,I did not attend Additional Mathematics class because I was not feeling well. The next day, when other students did the exercises, they can did it easily. But me?I cannot answer the questions although it was just a simple questions.I feel ashamed with myself. This show that how important to attend classes.I can also ask questions straightly if I did not understand the lectures.I think that lecturers will try to teach me their best. So,when I went back home,it is easy for me to make a revision because I understand what the topic that lecturers explain to me.…
