Self-Presentation
The concept of self-presentation and impression management can be compared due to both have an aim to make favorable impressions on other people. In self-presentation the individual may act or behave in a manner that is favorable or make an impression that relates to someone else’s thoughts. This specially takes me to a time when I interviewed for my current position. Interview are a great way to exercise self-presentation and impression management, the first meeting can create interest or denial almost immediately for an employer. Although, I knew very little about the position, I had applied for, I knew the way I dressed, spoke and engaged with the interviewer would all be very important to me getting the job. My intention was to not trick the interviewer but give them every reason to hire me for the position. The skillsets were very different from my previous job so in now learning of impression management, the task at hand was to also convince the interviewer, what I did not know was not very relevant when it came to the years of knowledge I still had within the company.
The two concepts can also be similar in their ways to influence the perceptions of other people. This was also a relevant case in my decision to join the military. I perceived the military as a job I may not have been the best at accomplishing. However, through long talks with my recruiter, I had the feeling, I was more than able to do the training and be the best soldier I could be.     1. The song, “Here Without You” by 3 Doors Down came to have a very significant meaning to me this past September, after my grandmother passed away. The day she died, and a few days after I remained seemingly unaffected and went on with my usual routine of work and partying, I spoke of it to my friends casually, and when they offered support I replied indifferently “it’s all good, that’s what happens”. Unable to take it anymore, I grabbed my keys and headed off, driving like a maniac. The stereo was so loud I wouldn’t have heard if there was a siren going off right next to me. The tears continued to flow, blurring my vision. The music continued to blast, impairing my hearing. As I got onto the freeway I quickly passed the 100mph mark on my speedometer.
