A self-managed team is a group of employees that 's responsible and accountable for all or most aspects of producing a product or delivering a service. Self-managing work team effectiveness is defined as both high performance and employee quality of work life Traditional organizational structures assign tasks to employees depending on their specialist skills or the functional department within which they work. To get work done, many companies organize employees into self-managing teams that are basically left to run themselves with some guidance from an external leader.
At Digital, Ayr, management had to learn to step back and let the groups reach their own decisions and in so doing time taken to actually management the organization was increased. Although a lot of consideration was given to the transition it contributed to the success of the approach. Self-managed teams have greater ownership of the tasks they perform and the end product or service they deliver. Self-managed teams tend to be less costly and more productive than employees working within a traditional hierarchical structure because the team performs both technical and management tasks. Team members may also fill in for each other to cover holidays and absences. Decisions made by self-managed teams are more effective because they 're made by the people who know most about the job.
A sector in Trinidad and Tobago where self-managed teams can be seen quite often is in the Public Service. Employees in various departments’ namely human resources and finance are generally self-managed teams. Employees generally plan and schedule the workflow and manage annual leave and absence, in addition to minor technical tasks. Management and technical responsibilities are typically rotated among the team members as career advancement in the clerical stream usually allows for this. Although these teams may be seen as a cohesive self-managed team where there is a sense of trust and respect between team members, in

    Self-managed teams offer a few advantages that can be used at Sandwich Blitz like having a stronger commitment, employee satisfaction, and faster product and service development. There are also some drawbacks to having self-managed teams. Self managed teams can be difficult to implement at first and failure is a risk when not implemented at the right time or without the right amount of leadership. Self-managed teams could work to a certain extent at Sandwich Blitz such as having employees cross trained to do different jobs within the company. This would help to increase the flexibility of the team in dealing with personnel shortages and some of the things that Dalman has to do on a daily basis. This would increase Dalman and Lei’s knowledge of the work processes and in turn would help the employees solve problems more efficiently. However, Dalman would need to pick team members that he trusts and feels comfortable with handling the day to day responsibilities in the work place. Dalman will have to take the difficulty of making self-managed teams into consideration as well as being willing to invest some of his time into developing the team and removing himself when he feels comfortable with the team leaders. I believe Dalman and Lei could really benefit from forming self-managed teams because then they will not have to do all the work themselves so they can have a little more free time.     While visiting all of their operating locations has heard how successful they have been using the team approach. If Dalman and Lei would assign managers under them they would be able to be more equipped to handle the daily activities of Sandwich Blitz. The self-managed teams would require training to be able to determine what type of training would help the handle the daily responsibilities. The difference between a group of people working for and team,is that a group will interact and do a task but will not necessarily work together to achieve goals or achieve performance improvements and a team will work together as one to trust each other and accomplish the goals. Once they are trained they will be able to reach their goals. This would also allow Dalman’s involvement in visiting each individual organization could be decreased. The self-managed teams should be able to hand manager operation concerns. Lei will able to stay back and completely concentrate on Sandwich Blitz’s financial matters without being disturbed. “Teams can enhance speed and be powerful forces for innovation and change” (Bateman, 2013). When it comes to monitoring and implementing the company’s policies Dalman and Lei can train the self-managed team so each of the employees can understand what they are supposed to do. Not only will the employees no the company’s policies they would know the positives and the negatives of the company. Executing what Dalman and Lei’s knowledge to Sandwich Blitz work processes would help he teams solve problems and develop improvements. A self-managed teams can help Dalman and Leis Sandwich Blitz increase team productivity, such as cross training the employees of various positions within the company.
