Self Driving Vehicles: Past, Present, And Future
I’ve been driving for a few years now, and I’ve never been able to like it. To me it’s getting from point a to point b, nothing else. Vehicles have been the main method we have used to travel for several decades now, but the way we use them is drastically changing. The reason this subject interests me personally is not only because I plan to be an engineer. But because along with the invention of electric cars have introduced self driving cars. Let's think about the standard vehicle and what they offer us today. The car I drive and the majority of cars people drive today run on gasoline. Gasoline is not a great fuel source by any means, environmentally or in efficiency. It is made with oil, and oil is a finite resource that is used immensely quicker than the Earth produces it. Most of the energy from gasoline is lost when converted into energy. A small group of engineers in Silicon Valley decided to see if they could develop a new vehicle. A vehicle that operates solely on electricity, a more convenient and efficient fuel.
Electricity in comparison is much safer and healthy for the environment. What really interested me is the price differences, to get a full charge versus a full tank is roughly one …show more content…
Self driving vehicles would mean I no longer having to drive myself. This would also change traffic back ups, roads with thinner lanes, speed limits, road designs, and more. Google maps is a prime example of this because they have used this technology and used it on their mapping trucks to drive themselves around the world. This will drastically change how many people die a year in car crashes as well. It will take many years before self driving technology is more affordable to all customers, but it is estimated to happen. Many are researching and implementing the latest technology or submitting a patent for that design. Technology is great for society but with safety in mind that must be the main priority. The NHTSA estimates the U.S. economic and social costs of vehicle accidents, excluding the cost of car ownership, at $871 billion a year (Peterson). The 9.2 million dollars of damage will be decreased ("Top 20 Pros and Cons”). Computers will not be able to crash because of all the sensors they have to keep you safe. At the same time, self-driving cars remove much of the human error that contributes to the vast majority of injuries and deaths.
